"You don't know me," she said, trying to deflect her feelings. "You don't know what I've been through. What I've done."

He turned then, his gray-blue eyes flaming like a crashing wave. "And you don't know me. But there's a rule here on Driftwood Bay. We only have to worry about what we know and see here, today."

Michelle Lancaster left her home and family in Spirit, Louisiana for Driftwood Bay, Florida, still unable to deal with the pain that's been haunting her. She's unable to forgive herself for an accident that no one could have foreseen or had ever wished on their worst enemy. She's not exactly sure what it is she's looking for in Driftwood Bay but the one thing she never expects to find while she's out riding her horse Coco along the shoreline is the solitary figure of a man whose eyes reflect something too familiar: sadness.

Brodie Stevens is a boat captain and an accomplished artist that works with driftwood as well as having worn a variety of other hats prior to his arrival in Driftwood Bay. He may want people to think he's an easygoing beach bum but his ready smile is hiding a past that has left him scarred. Coming across Michelle on her horse makes him very curious about her, wanting to pursue the mysterious woman who looks like she's carrying a very heavy burden. He knows she's different, making her all the more worthy of knowing.

Driftwood Cowboy is the first book in the Driftwood Bay series by bestselling author Lenora Worth. This was a beautifully written story of redemption and forgiveness, something that both the lead characters are searching for. Michelle and Brodie both have pasts that are shadowing them relentlessly, and while Michelle is trying to forgive herself, something she doesn't believe possible, Brodie needs to forgive his parents--his mother for abandoning him and his father for not stepping up and treating him quite terribly.

As a reader, I felt the sense of hopelessness and despair that Michelle was drowning in, totally understandable emotions, and while Brodie looked like he wanted to be the one to save her from all that, he needed to be saved from all the negative emotions, thoughts, and memories still lingering in his own life, courtesy of his father's callousness. There's a lot of pain and heartache that both the lead characters have endured and need to overcome neither is minimized or trivialized throughout the course of the book.

It takes a special kind of author to come up with such an emotional and heartfelt story with two inspiring and courageous characters and then put them all together in a short but sweet package that leaves you filled with hope and faith, and I don't mean purely in a religious sense, though there is that as well. I highly recommend Driftwood Cowboy to anyone that appreciates a beautiful love story and recognizes that some of the best tales are told without fancy distractions. This is a 2015 favorite and gets five-plus stars! ♥
