Review: "Crossing Lines" by Alannah Lynne (Heat Wave #3)

They say that the best things come in small packages and Kevin Mazze would very much like to explore that saying with Sam Wallace, the mini powerhouse of a building inspector sent to check if his latest development project can get the approval needed to open for sales. But it wouldn't be right to even entertain thoughts of what exactly he'd like to do to and with Sam because of her job and the fact that Kevin is in a relationship of sorts with Lizbeth Sanders. But soon the guy everyone thinks is the epitome of Mr. Nice Guy crosses certain lines that belie the monicker he's saddled with.

Sam's ex-husband's parting words to her have made her doubt her ability to attract and keep a man's attention, feeling as if she isn't womanly enough for anyone. She tries to satisfy herself with a box full of sex toys and equipment meant for her to play around with her fantasies. Meeting Kevin makes her wish that she had hm to play with instead, but her insecurities constantly leave her questioning herself and she doesn't want her young daughter becoming attached to Kevin, especially since what's going on between them is temporary. Or so she tries to convince herself over and over again.

Crossing Lines is book number three in Alannah Lynne's Heat Wave series and re-introduces us to Kevin Mazze, who was introduced in book one as one of Eric Monteague's best friends and a successful land developer. Here he meets and falls for Samantha Wallace, a single mom who's relocated to the area and is working as a building inspector. Kevin's in an on-again, off-again relationship with someone but has been wanting to end it for weeks and Sam's still feeling the effects of her ex-husband cheating on her. They're both attracted to one another but there are complications on both sides.

Though Kevin was already contemplating splitting up with his girlfriend when he met Sam, the fact that he hadn't basically underscores that he cheated and Sam has an aversion to cheating, no thanks to her ex-husband and his secretary. This presents an interesting dynamic to the story because Kevin really is a good guy who tries his best to not hurt anyone but even the best of intentions can lead to making wrong choices. I liked the complexity that surrounded their relationship and how Sam's daughter Michaela was wise beyond her years. Crossing Lines was both naughty and nice! 4.5 stars! ♥
