Review: "Bad Company" by Lissa Jay (Company of Sinners MC #1)

Kelly Ann Darrow is a psychologist and her latest patient has her beyond fascinated. Brought in unconscious and with a suicide note attached to his clothing, the man identified as Cameron Iss in the note has been in a coma for several days. Kelly wants to delve into the mystery that is Cameron but she's completely taken by his physical appearance. When he regains consciousness, he has no memory of who he really is, other than that he's an American citizen, or how he ended up in Scotland of all places.

As much as she tries to deny her pull to him, Kelly crosses the line with Cameron, putting her career at risk if what she's done ever becomes public. But this is more than a one-time thing for either of them, with their feelings intensifying as the days pass. However, when bits and pieces of Cameron's memory returns, he's left with even more questions than answers and he knows he can only find the truth if he returns to the U.S. Will what they have survive the time and distance or are they destined to remain apart?

Bad Company is the first book in the Company of Sinners MC series by Lissa Jay and is a contemporary romance set in both Scotland and the United States. The premise of the story was an intriguing one: a man with amnesia and the psychologist tasked to his case fall for one another and the few clues he has of his identity suggest that he has a criminal past. With a promising story line, this book had some good moments but it did flounder at times and the suspense thriller aspect surpassed the romance.

There was obviously this connection between Kelly and Cameron and I'm all for sex in romance novels, but the solo sex scenes here just felt gratuitous to the point that I was skimming through them. I mean, I get it. They're so hot for one another that they make do with all the self-pleasuring when they can't get together. Once or twice, fine, but when it happens multiple times? Then it ends up being repetitive and meaningless because it doesn't really add anything to move the story or characters forward.

I didn't like the romance aspect as much as I did the suspense thriller aspect. There's a lot going on with Cameron, whose real name turns out to be Cain Somers, and I enjoyed reading his journey of finding out who really is and what led to him suddenly being found in Scotland. I initially didn't realize that this was part of a series but it doesn't have a cliffhanger and it reads well as a standalone. I do wish there was a bit more fine-tuning that was done but Bad Company was a pretty good book overall. Three stars. ♥
