Review: "The Virgin Romance Novelist" by Meghan Quinn

What happens when you're an aspiring romance novelist and the only experience you have of either romance or sex is what you've read in regency romances your mother hid under her bed? Try as she might to write a romance novel that she thinks will be good, Rosie has no idea just how diverse the readership is for the romance genre, especially with the more erotic books that have readers demanding for more of the same. Her best friend and roommate Henry and her other roommate and close friend Delaney come to her rescue, though she thinks the kind of help they're offering is borderline embarrassing on her end.

From getting her very first Brazilian wax to deal with her, ahem, "briar patch" to learning how to give a man, umm, pleasure orally, Henry and Delaney are there to guide her through the road to devirginization. Along the way, though, she learns certain hilariously painful lessons and dates an array of men who have her reeling. But what happens when the one man that she's always cared for turns out to want to be the one to be with her when the time comes to lose her virginity? The feelings they share are very much mutual but is Rosie prepared to get into a romantic relationship if the possibility of it ending looms?

The Virgin Romance Novelist is a hilarious romance novel from Meghan Quinn that had me snorting as quietly as possible countless times. If you're expecting high-brow humor, you're going to be disappointed, but if what you are looking for is a book that follows the trials and tribulations of a virgin desperately wanting to have the know-how to write a romance novel that won't suck, then this is something you should definitely check out. Some of the scenarios may seem really far-fetched but they had me laughing like silly and hey, who doesn't need a good laugh every once in a while, even if it is at the expense of poor Rosie?

I will admit that there were moments that I felt the humor was a tad crude, but then I was still laughing so who the heck am I to judge if I can't even fake a disapproving look, right? The story itself did bring to mind another book that was released last month and that I also read and reviewed but there were enough differences between the two that they're able to stand apart from each other. Rosie is lovably and laughably naive and both her roommates, Henry and Delaney, are so into her business that it's embarrassing and yet you can tell that there's a sincerity on their part to help her out as much as they can.

For those who are looking for a romance read that will make you laugh (or giggle or snort) out loud, The Virgin Romance Novelist hits a lot of high notes and does so without ever losing its focus on the actual story line. The laughs aren't there just for the sake of getting a laugh out of the reader. I can actually imagine someone going through one or two or more of the things that Rosie went through but would probably never admit it in public. Hehe. You'll want to cheer Rosie on and wish that her romantic idealism were more of the norm than the impossible or mythical thing that it's now, sadly, become. 4.5 stars! ♥
