Review: "The Hysterics" by Kristen Hope Mazzola

Fallon Dunbar is dead. Well, at least that's what she's allowed the rest of the world, other than a very small group of people (i.e. her mother and stepfather, her best friend, and her late father's best friend, who is now her boss). Needing to start over and get away from the lifestyle that may have made her a rock goddess but also made her an addict, Fallon becomes Fae Dunham and now works as an assistant editor for a music publication. She changes the color of her hair, removes most of her piercings, save for a few favorites, and switches to a more professional wardrobe. Not everyone gets a second chance and no one knows her real identity...until a fellow drummer from an up and coming band recognizes who she is.

Dane Pearson is the drummer for The Hysterics, a band he's more than proud to be part of and they's slowly making a name for themselves in the rock scene. He also happens to be a music journalist and one of the newest perks of his job is working with his new boss, Fae Dunham. It doesn't take long for him to realize that Fae is actually Fallon Dunbar, the legendary drummer for Regicide Assisted and someone the world thought had overdosed. Aside from his attraction to her, Dane wants to know the real Fallon and the reasons behind her disappearance and re-emergence. Soon, they're falling hard and fast for one another, but for how long will they be able to keep Fallon's secret from the people around them and the public?

The Hysterics is a standalone novel by author Kristen Hope Mazzola and is a rock romance between a famous female drummer trying to start her life over and an up and coming male drummer trying to discover the woman behind the facade. Overdosing was the one thing that finally woke Fallon up to the harsh reality that her life was spinning out of control and that she needed to take drastic measures if she wanted to continue living. There are several flashbacks that will help give a better idea and somewhat clearer understanding of what kind of lives Fallon and Dane led prior to meeting one another and the story is told from the points of view of both the lead characters, often switching within each of the chapters.

Overall, this was a pretty good book, but it did suffer from having a lot of unnecessary stuff included in the story. In the first chapter, it's mentioned that Dane was thinking of "Fae" but he hadn't met Fae yet, so why would he have been thinking of her? Then there were several things going on that weren't fully explained, leaving me temporarily stuck with answered questions. I also found it strange that there weren't more people who recognized Fallon, especially because the face piercings and tattoos were still very much there, plus she was working for a music publication and met The Hysterics who were familiar with her band and music. Still, The Hysterics was enjoyable and has me looking into the author's other works.  Four stars! ♥
