Review: "Dare to Hold" by Carly Phillips (Dare to Love #6)
Note: This ARC was provided by RockStar Lit PR in exchange for an honest review.
Scott Dare and Meg Thompson's first meeting was under less than ideal circumstances. Scott's job as a cop and his protective nature were in full force when he found out about Meg being attacked by her ex-boyfriend and the father of the baby she was carrying. He's tried to keep tabs on her but she's made it clear that she isn't interested in him. Her past is littered with wrong decisions and choices, something she doesn't want to repeat especially since she has to think of what's best for her unborn child. But will choosing to be with a man as protective and domineering as Scott be a bad thing for her and her baby?
Dare to Hold is the sixth and latest release in the Dare to Love series by Carly Phillips and one that caught my interest as soon as I saw the synopsis. Scott Dare has a need to protect and Meg Thompson's situation calls for someone to protect her and her baby and even though they begin to fall for one another, Scott's never believed in being worthy enough to have a happily ever after of his own, no thanks to his ex-wife who left him jaded. Add to that the obviously unbalanced and violent ex-boyfriend that keeps threatening Meg and the baby and this was a book that had a great combo of contemporary romance and suspense.
I wasn't really a fan of Meg's when I first encountered her in the previous book, Dare to Touch, which was about Olivia Dare and Dylan Rhodes, Scott's younger sister and Meg's high school boyfriend and now-best friend. She was needy and clingy when it came to Dylan and there was a part of me that couldn't help but wonder if she was still pining for the guy. Thankfully, she grew on me and I could finally see that her feelings for Dylan were purely platonic and I had a better understanding of why she seemed to constantly set herself up for heartbreak. She couldn't trust her instincts, even when they told her Scott was different.
Scott was a sweetheart and his protectiveness was endearing. What he went through with his ex-wife was sad, and while it didn't make him wary of women in general, his idea of finding happiness and having a family became tainted because of what she did. And what he did for Meg in the latter part of chapter eleven? Le sigh. Dare I say that Scott is now my favorite Dare? Yes, that oh-so-corny pun was intended. ^.^ With two main characters who were perfect for each other but had imperfect pasts to contend with along with a stalker ex-boyfriend, Dare to Hold is my favorite in the series to date. It gets 4.5 stars! ♥
