Erik Monteague makes no secret of his 24/2 rule when it comes to women, never staying more than twenty-four hours with them and dating them more than two times is an uncommon thing. Then he meets a beautiful woman with whom he shares one memorable night, only to be shocked when he wakes up to find her gone. It bothers him more than he'd care to admit and he spends months searching for even a glimpse of her whenever he's in the same bar where they first met. When he unexpectedly sees her at a gathering in his hometown, he's determined to finish what they started all those months ago.

Kat Owens needs a fresh start and she's determined to focus all her energies on doing the best job possible at the advertising agency where she now works. She's ready to prove herself capable of being tapped as the next vice president of the company, but when she locks eyes with the man she slept with and never forgot and later finds out his advertising account is being transferred to her, she knows she's in trouble. She's crossed the line between professional and personal before, and while she wants to keep her distance, he's making it very difficult to stick to her guns, and she can't help but wonder if he's worth the risk.

Saving Me is the first book in the Heat Wave series by author Alannah Lynne and was previously titled Savin' Me under three other covers. This is a contemporary romance that I went into completely blind and was pleasantly surprised by just how much I enjoyed reading it. The story itself may start off as one filled with light-hearted humor, but there's more than meets the eye. The lead characters have their own sets of issues, she with her family hang-ups and he mourning a love lost, so there is angst but the kind that had my heart squeezing in empathy, especially when those issues make it difficult for them to move on.

I liked Kat and Eric as individual characters and as a couple, with her being strong yet vulnerable and he battling demons even as he projects a laidback persona. These two seemed perfectly suited for one another and most everyone around them agreed. Eric's closest friends were also memorable, making them prime pickings for the spotlight to be turned their way in other books in the series. The author's writing style was easygoing but definitely not lazy and she did a fab job conveying a story with equal parts sweet and steam. Saving Me started the Heat Wave series on the right foot and I'm giving it five stars. ♥
