Review: "The Truth About Jack" by Jody Gehrman

Note: This ARC was provided by Entangled Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

It's always been Dakota McCloud's dream to go to the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), so when she receives the good news that she's been accepted, other than her father, the two other people she wants to share her happiness with are her best friend River and boyfriend Cody. But then she opens an email from River telling her that she and Cody have been seeing each other. With a heart broken twice over, Dakota writes down her feelings on paper and places it in a bottle, throwing it out to the ocean.

Jack Sauvage notices Dakota from the minute he sees her but he becomes concerned when he sees how distraught she is. Later, he sees her at the very same beach that he's at and notices her throwing something into the water. As he walks along the shoreline, he sees a bottle with something inside it and decides to pick it up and check its contents. It's from Dakota sharing her story and asking whoever finds the bottle to hopefully write her back on the address that she's included. Jack is immediately hooked.

When Dakota receives a letter in the mail from Alejandro Torres, she's shocked that someone's actually found her bottle and read her note. She writes him back and through their correspondence, she becomes fascinated by his stories. This is the distraction she needs from the heartbreak that her ex-best friend and ex-boyfriend have caused. Then she meets a boy named Jack who fascinates her even more because it's just so easy to be around him. But what happens when she learns the truth about Jack?

The Truth About Jack is a standalone young adult (YA) romance by author Jody Gehrman and was a cute story about a girl named Dakota nursing a broken heart and writes a letter that she seals in a bottle, tossing it into the ocean, and is then picked up by a boy named Jack who decides to write her back but does so as someone else. The guy named Alejandro Torres is a mix of who Jack really is and who he thinks will capture Dakota's attention, making her think he's a wayward traveler originally from Spain.

This was a sweet, innocent romance that had a creative flair to it, thanks to the idea of Jack coming up with Alejandro to serve as Dakota's pen pal. Letter writing is something of a lost art and I loved the idea of these two teenagers exchanging their thoughts and feelings through pen and paper. Aside from the love story, there's also the journeys they both go on, deciding what it is they truly want for themselves, in order to make their young lives more meaningful. I'm giving The Truth About Jack 4.5 stars! ♥
