Review: High Risk by Brenna Aubrey (Point of No Return #1)

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via Give Me Books Promotions.

High Risk is the first in the new Point of No Return duet and my introduction to Brenna Aubrey's writing. Prior to reading this book, I was trying to rack my brain if I'd already read a story involving astronauts, and I couldn't immediately remember if I did. With this duet, we not only get astronauts, but we've got cosmonauts as well. And that along with a love story that employs the enemies-to-lovers trope had me sitting up and paying attention.

Thirty-five-year-old Commander Ryan Tyler is considered a hero by many, but the guilt that he continues to carry after losing his best friend while they were in space together has led him down a dark path. He promised Xander that he would continue to pursue their dream of flying in space, but when he's basically fired from NASA, Ty finds himself in limbo. His last hope comes in the form of Xventure, a privately owned space adventure company.

He's one of the chosen to become part of XPAC--XVenture Private Astronaut Corps--but in order for it to take off, it needs funding. There are a select few ready and willing to invest their money in XPAC but what it needs is money from a big-time investor insistent that Ty, who is the chosen face of the new venture, to clean up his act. A plan is put in place, but they think Ty needs someone who can keep him in line and make sure he doesn't screw things up. That someone is none other than Gray Barrett, psychotherapist and definitely NOT a fan of this American hero.

There's a fair bit of angst in this duet starter, and there's a lot more to Ty and Gray than you'd think. I liked the push and pull between the two, especially with Gray not being a pushover. She put Ty in his place whenever she thought it was necessary, but she also recognized that he was a man who was still hurting over the loss of his best friend. Ty was a man who was, for all intents and purposes, very much lost, and while he was resistant in the beginning, Gray was exactly who he needed to heal and get better. These two had tension to a T and they kept things entertaining.

Now, this book does end in a cliffhanger of sorts, and the release of the second book, High Reward, isn't for another couple of months--December 6th, to be exact. I'm ready and waiting for book two, but I may decide to check out Brenna Aubrey's back list to check out what I've been missing in the meantime. If those are as good as High Risk was and that I hope High Reward will be, then I'm going to be one heck of a busy reader over the next several weeks. If you like your romances with some oomph, then check out High Risk, which I'm giving 4.5 stars to. ♥
