Review: Right Kind of Mistake by Rebecca Thomas (Right Kind of Mistake #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by Patchwork Press Cooperative via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Haylie Keene is done with hockey players, having her heart broken by her boyfriend after he confessed to cheating on her with a puck bunny and deciding to leave her behind for the bright lights of the professional league. Her friends think maybe a round of revenge sex will get her back on track, and she doesn't need to look any further than Cam Erickson, her ex-boyfriend's teammate and friend. Their one night together proves to be much more than she expected, and as much as she tries to lump Cam together with the other jocks around, he's different. But Haylie doesn't want to risk getting her heart broken by yet another hockey player, and staying friends, though possibly with some extra benefits, is the best she can do with Cam. However, Cam is more than prepared to show Haylie that he's one risk that she won't regret taking.

Right Kind of Mistake is the first book in the series by the same title from author Rebecca Thomas and is a pretty quick read that ends in somewhat of a cliffhanger, meaning there isn't an absolute resolution to the issue as to whether Haylie Keene and Cam Erickson should pursue a romantic relationship or not. The story pretty much revolves between these two characters and Haylie's desire to have nothing to do with hockey players but unable to fully deny the pull that Cam has on her. The fact that Cam has had a thing for her for more than two years--all the while respecting the fact that she was in a relationship with someone else--was a bonus to this guy who seemed to be too good to be true. He's the personification of the ideal book boyfriend, and whenever Haylie would treat him less than he deserved, I shook my head in disbelief.

There were times that I felt that the story was playing out much longer than I though was necessary, but this first part, as a whole, had enough of the necessary elements to make it a pretty good read. There's a fair amount of sexual tension between Haylie and Cam and it was an interesting touch to have Cam the far more invested one in forging a relationship than Haylie was. We get to know the two but not as much as I would have wanted, so I'm hoping that we'll get a bit more back story, especially as far as Cam's feelings for Haylie and why he decided to bide his time for as long as he did. This is the first part of a duet, and we'll have to wait until March for the conclusion of Cam and Haylie's love story, but I'm invested enough that I'll be keeping an eye out for that particular release. Right Kind of Mistake gets four out of five stars. ♥
