Review: Wicked Edge by Rebecca Zanetti (Realm Enforcers #2)
Note: This ARC was provided by Kensington Books via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Coven Nine Enforcer Daire Dunne takes his job seriously, but he's been pulling double duty as a witch enforcer and working undercover to put a stop to the manufacturing and distribution of the lethal Apollo drug. He takes the opportunity to kick back and do something for himself and it comes in no better form than the gorgeous blonde he meets in a local bar. But after one steamy kiss, Daire finds himself incapacitated. The woman has drugged him and taken important papers containing information on anything and everything to do with the Apollo drug. Now, he not only needs to get his intel back but he intends to learn who the daring vixen who drugged him is and what her motives are for doing what she did.
She calls herself Cee Cee Jones and that's the only tidbit she's willing to share with almost anyone who crosses her path. She has one goal in mind and that's to put an end to Ivan Bychdov. She's worked too hard and prepared for too long to be distracted, but she never counted on that distraction being a witch enforcer who sees her as more than a helpless and weak female. She's secretive and conniving, but Daire Dunne is unexpectedly chipping away at her defenses. But she has a mission to accomplish, in the name of the mate she lost and the family she failed once and hopes to finally protect once and for all. Will she be able to trust the witch who makes her feel alive and vows to keep her safe, or will she proceed on her own?
Wicked Edge is the second book in bestselling author Rebecca Zanetti's Realm Enforcers paranormal romance series and is the story of Daire Dunne, a witch enforcer from Dublin, Ireland who is currently working undercover in Seattle, Washington to find information on a dangerous drug called Apollo that contains planekite, a mineral known to fatally harm humans and witches. When he crosses paths with Cee Cee Jones, his entire world is shoved off its axis and it becomes a chase of sorts between the two of them each and every time she pushes her agenda and does what she has to in order to see her mission through. The woman is keeping a lot of things from Daire and once the truth comes out, there'll be no turning back.
I loved Wicked Ride, which started off the series with a bang, and this second in the series gives readers a fresh love story between Daire and Cee Cee while still carrying over the story arc involving the Apollo drug. We get more answers here as to who some of the players are, but there's a larger conspiracy that seems to be going on, one that appears to be targeting the Dunnes and the Coven Nine. This book keeps us on our proverbial toes, especially the smart and sassy Cee Cee, whose real identity was a surprise and who is a far more formidable female than she appears. And Daire? He's alpha male personified but his protectiveness, love, and loyalty for those closest to him make the witch enforcer all the more irresistible.
Just like the book before it, this one is aptly titled, keeping readers on edge all throughout, and while we're still left up in the air as far as the Apollo story arc is concerned, this particular story more than satisfies the expectations set up for the paranormal romance genre, plus there are elements of suspense that keep this far from boring. I'm curious to see if the third book will be about Simone Brightston and Nikolaj Veis or Adam Dunne and Tori Monzelle. Adam is an enforcer but the book's cover is red instead of black so it could be Nick; either way, that book is going on my to-be-read list, as are the Dark Protectors and Sin Protectors series by Rebecca Zanetti. Wicked Edge is a fun and exciting read and gets five out of five stars. ♥
