Review: Once Upon a Power Play by Jennifer Bonds (Risky Business #2)

Note: This ARC was provided by Entangled Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

When professional hockey player Ryan Douglas finds himself in the middle of a robbery with a gorgeous spitfire in a gold dress and furry boots and ends up sleeping with her later that night, it's an evening that he won't soon forget. Finding her at a charity event his team is part of gives him the opportunity to get her to go out with him and he soon learns he's going to have to be on his A-game when it comes to Chloe Jacobs. She may think that he's just like every other guy she's gone out with and his being a pro hockey player may, for the first time ever, be a point against him, but Ryan is ready to make whatever play necessary to spend more time with Chloe. But going out with someone of Ryan's stature comes with a price and it could be too steep for someone as mistrustful as Chloe to pay, even if she is falling for the guy.

Once Upon a Power Play is the second book in author Jennifer Bonds's contemporary romance series entitled Risky Business. Here, we have Chloe Jacobs, who was introduced in the first book, Once Upon a Dare, as Olivia Masterson's best friend and colleague. Just like Olivia, Chloe finds herself coming face to face with the guy she had a one-night stand with in the most unlikely of situations. She's already sworn off men after being dumped via text message yet again and Ryan Douglas being a hockey player is just another point against him. She's more than hesitant to become involved with someone that she assumes lives up to the reputation set by countless other professional athletes, but Ryan knows what he wants and that's more than a one-night thing with Chloe. There's definite chemistry between the two and it's one that's palpable.

I really liked Ryan. He was just this nice guy and the fact that he was able to forgive his best friend for being with his ex-girlfriend as soon as she walked away from their relationship proves that he knows how to value the people in his life. There was no denying that he went above and beyond when it came to Chloe, and I was rather ticked off with her when she accepted a tabloid report as gospel truth and let her preconceived biases get the better of her, especially since I felt that after the expected conflict between the tow of them, Ryan made more of an effort than she did to work things through. I found myself agreeing with Ryan's best friend Bash, who I hope will get a story of his own because the guy needs a happily-ever-after of his own, in his assessment of Chloe's actions. Still, I'm giving Once Upon a Power Play four stars. ♥
