Review: Once Upon a Dare by Jennifer Bonds (Risky Business #1)

For five years, Olivia Masterson has made sure that nothing got in the way of her pursuit of success in the world of advertising, and now, all that hard work appears to be paying off. She's expecting to be promoted as partner in her firm and her best friend suggests that Olivia celebrate by accepting her dare: to hook up with a random stranger at a bar. When she finds out that her one-night stand is the same person that was given her spot as partner, Olivia decides that while she may have to work with Cole Bennett, she refuses to give in to his flirting and innuendos again. The thing is, the chemistry between them is off the charts and Cole doesn't see anything wrong with them sleeping together, even if he is her boss. Olivia doesn't want people thinking she slept her way to a promotion, but resisting Cole is proving to be a difficult task indeed.

Once Upon a Dare is the first book in the Risky Business series from author Jennifer Bonds and is an office romance that begins with a dare that leads to a one-night stand that soon turns into something far more complicated professionally and personally for advertising executive Olivia Masterson and advertising firm partner Cole Bennett. There's no denying that Olivia is a very competitive individual and her wanting to achieve success is admirable, especially since she wants to do it based on the quality of work that she's done. Cole knows how it is to gain and loss success and while he appreciates Olivia's competitive spirit, it's the one thing that seems to be preventing them from having something past that hook-up they shared. With lots of tension inside the boardroom and the bedroom, fireworks abound with this twosome.

There's a lot of bickering but it's balanced by the playful banter Olivia and Cole engage in when they're tired of being feisty and ready to be more flirtatious with each other. Even as they try to resist the pull that exists between them--well, the resistance was more on Olivia's side than Cole's--and strive to keep things professional, the fact is, these two make a formidable pair at work and even better one in the romantic sense. Sometimes, though, it felt as if Olivia was too hung up on wanting to be this woman who wanted to conquer the advertising world, and blaming Cole for her lost promotion and accusing him of interference became unfair after a certain point of constantly bringing both issues up. Still, the good far outweighed the not-so-good and I enjoyed the story and characters. Once Upon a Dare was an overall four-star read. ♥
