Review: His Witch to Keep by Zoe Forward (Keepers of the Veil #2)

Note: This ARC was provided by Entangled Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

For years, he has kept watch over, but ever since the night they spent together in ways he knows they shouldn't have, Alexi Jovec hasn't been able to stay away from Pleiades witch and MI6 agent Serenity Danssaert. He's bound by rules that a death reaper--someone who ushers souls to Hades--such as himself needs to abide by and one of those rules instilled upon him is his not being able to be in any relationship. He always follows the rules but Serenity is the one being that he's more than tempted to break them for.

Serenity has no clue Alexi is a death reaper. All she's aware of is that he's an operative who's played assassin more times than she can remember. She's never forgotten their one night together, nor has she forgotten that he left her alone in the hotel room afterward. With her sister now in trouble, the one thing she wishes she could avoid was asking Alexi for help, but he's the best at what he does and she needs all the help she can get. They work well together, but will they ever have that one chance to be a couple together?

His Witch to Keep is the second release in the Zoe Forward-penned Keepers of the Veil series and shifts the spotlight to Serenity Danssaert and Alexi Jovec, both of whom were introduced in the previous book, Protecting His Witch. The events here take place a few months after those in book one and while Serenity may no longer with MI6, she's taking on missions that are far too dangerous for Alexi's liking, forcing him to become involved in her affairs. They're both keeping certain secrets from one another, left with no other option. But the pull that's always been there appears to have grown even stronger after their one and only time together. Unfortunately, Pleiades witches are only bound to druid sentries, something that Alexi is not, so the odds appear to be against them. Add to that Alexi's actual job preventing him from ever being in any sort of relationship and their love affair appears to be doomed from the beginning. What follows next is both Serenity and Alexi trying--and failing--to keep their relationship purely professional.

Zoe Forward keeps the momentum going with this follow-up and I loved how this was a completely different story from the first one. There was a lot of intrigue and mystery involved here, and it could have a lot to do with the fact that Serenity is a former agent and Alexi is a known operative. Trying to figure out who's behind the plot to get rid of Serenity by any means possible was harder than I thought it would be and when the mastermind was revealed, I was floored. Aside from the mystery suspense aspect, we've also got two beings who, for all intents and purposes, shouldn't be together but are so perfectly suited to one another that you can't help but cheer them on to a happily-ever-after, even if it may end up not being sanctioned by the powers that be. Alexi's protectiveness was sweet and endearing, especially since Serenity was someone who could hold her own. I really liked these two together, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that book three will hopefully and finally be about Eli Morgan. His Witch to Keep gets five stars! ♥
