Review: Unseen Messages by Pepper Winters

Note: This ARC was provided by InkSlinger PR in exchange for an honest review.

Damn it. I'm feeling rather torn about this book and not in a good way. Pepper Winters isn't a new author to me in that her back list includes titles I've heard of and come across on Goodreads and e-retailers. I know she's often received high ratings and rave reviews, so she's one of those authors that I've kept on my radar. When I got the opportunity read and review her latest release, I was excited. Now, I know that this is supposedly very different from her usual dark, erotic romances, but I didn't really care. I was ready to give it a go and already had high expectations based on her established reputation.

The thing is, the minute I realized how effing long the book was, I was struck silent. This is why I wish the number of pages was included in the information provided for blog tour sign-ups. It's not that I don't like reading kilometric books, but this was probably the longest one I've come across in a long time. Still, I dove in, but it was...just...so...l.o.n.g. I'm an advocate of quality versus quantity, and while this story certainly had it's very high points, what with a good story and two main--Galloway Oak and Estelle Evermore--and two supporting--Conner and Piper Evermore--characters that I won't be forgetting anytime soon because they didn't just survive but they made life on the island their new normal, my mind did wander more than once, and I took more than my usual number of breaks while reading it, and not solely because it's a lengthy read.

You know what they say about anything in excess not being a good thing? That's what happened to me here. Too many lengthy descriptions that filled too many pages and the thing was, the struggle the four crash survivors were going through on a daily basis for as long as they did was palpable enough without it getting overly wordy. Yes, I did finish the novel, and yes, there were things about it that were good. Unfortunately, the not-so-good was edging out the good and by the time I finished reading this overly long drawn out story, I felt like the foursome did after the crash: tired and at a loss.

I'm pretty sure I'm already in the minority as far as the reviews go, and while I so dislike giving anything less than four stars, I had to go with how I felt during and after I read the book. So, in the end, I'm going to have to give Unseen Messages three stars. ♥
