Review: Lay It Down by Carina Adams (Bastards MC #1-#2)

Note: This ARC was provided by Ardent PRose in exchange for an honest review.

Lay It Down contains the first two novels in the Bastards MC series, Always Been Mine and Honey Whiskey, from author Carina Adams. The first book is purely about Matthew Murphy and Josephine Walker, best friends and co-workers who find themselves re-defining their relationship when both their personal lives go awry. The second book still touches upon the evolving--although in more of a sputtering fashion at times--relationship between Matty and Jo, but also delves deeper into the Bastards motorcycle club, of which Matty is actually a ranking member. There's a lot of back and forth that goes on in both books and while both Matty and Jo are extremely close, sharing things with each other they wouldn't with anyone else, they still have secrets from one another, secrets that could very well impact what they have.

The best thing about this two-book set had to be Matty. He was one of those honest-to-goodness nice guys who cared a great deal about the people who mattered to him. He loves his job and he loves his club. He tries to be the best father he can to his son Sam. He's had feelings for Jo for quite some time but the fact that she was married with two children stopped him from pursuing anything, so the most he can do is be there for her as her best friend. I felt for him because there were quite a few times where Jo seemed wishy-washy, unable to really commit to a decision. Matty certainly deserved better than that because he was a hundred percent invested in her and the possibility of what they could have together...until he wasn't, but that's where the second book picks up and things become befuddles, losing focus of the story.

Both books combined make for a rather lengthy read, although I must say that the second one seemed to muddle through until the reveal, and because it took so long to get there, my anticipation wasn't as high as I would have wanted it to be. It became more about getting to the end rather than wanting them to have that happily-ever-after they've been waiting for. I will say, though, that I'm curious to see where the series will head to next, because the members of the Bastards MC were an interesting lot, especially Rocker. While the second half of this two-book box set did falter in the second half, this was an overall pretty good read. My curiosity about the Bastards MC has already been piqued so I'd like to see what Carina Adams has up her sleeve when the next installment for the Bastards MC is released. Lay It Down gets four stars. ♥
