Review: The Messenger by TM Smith (Archangel #1)

Ooh! I like it when an author switches gears and gives their readers something completely different from anything they've written in the past. I've read TM Smith's Survivor series, which has a more romantic suspense feel to it, but the author takes readers into the realm of the paranormal with her new Archangel trilogy. There are three main characters here: Gabriel, Michael, and Lucifer, all of whom are God's archangels. Gabriel has always loved Michael; Michael has always loved Lucifer, and Lucifer returns that love as well, sharing a bond with Michael. God loves each of them unconditionally. But when Lucifer begins to turn away from God, will a fall from God's grace also mean a break from the tether that keeps his heart firmly with Michael's? And when all is said and done will it Gabriel that Michael turns to? What will a fallen angel mean to the rest of Heaven and what could it mean for everyone else?
The Messenger turned out to be an unexpected surprise in that I found myself really getting into it and not wanting to put the book down even though it was already the wee hours of the morning. There's a lot of world building that goes on, and while this can be a rather tedious thing, when done well, you appreciate the time the author puts into it. And I'm glad that TM Smith took her time and did what she felt was necessary in order for the world that she had in her head to translate well in words and on paper (or screen). With me being Catholic, I know all about the story of God's fallen angel and the archangels that remained to watch over everything God created. This is also not the first twist on the whole Lucifer story that I've read, but I like the direction that the author appears to be taking not just The Messenger in particular but the series going forward. I can't wait for book two. Four stars! ♥
