Review: The Christmas Lights Battle by Skylar M. Cates (Shelby Beach #1)

The Christmas Lights Battle is my first read from Skylar M. Cates--an author who's been on my to-be-discovered list for quite a while!--and it's the first in her brand-new Shelby Beach series. This enemies-to-lovers romance pits two neighbors against each other when the neighborhood's annual Christmas decorating competition rolls around. Divorced single dad Julian Moss wants the experience to be a positive one for his daughter and son, and fitness trainer Leo Moss hopes to use the prize money towards his new business. As friendly as Leo tries to be, Julian already has it out for him, no thanks to the rambunctious dogs Leo is watching over and the fact that Julian is way more attracted to his new neighbor than he'd care to admit. Both men push each other's buttons, but for how long will either man be able to deny the pull they feel towards one another and could it ever last beyond the Christmas?

I'm in the midst of a holiday romance binge read, and this book was a fun addition to my reading list. It took me a bit to see Julian in a more positive light given how he was kind of a jerk towards Leo from the get-go, but I liked discovering the softer side of him and had a better understanding of why he had his guard up when it came to his neighbor. Leo was a sweetheart, and I loved that he wasn't depicted as some hot guy without any functioning brain cells. Whenever these two were together for the first few chapters, it was entertaining, and then when they finally decided to do something about their attraction towards one another, I found myself becoming invested, not just in the two of them as a couple but how they would evolve as individuals, given that they did have certain issues and insecurities they needed to confront. Overall, The Christmas Lights Battle is a fun-filled, four-starred holiday read. ♥
