Review: "Temptation" by Robin Covington (Nashville Nights #1)

Kit Landry was the reigning princess of country music...until her life fell apart and she found herself spiraling out of control. After a successful stint in rehab, she's ready to prove that she's still got it and to earn back the trust of her label and those who have invested in her talent. But going back to being the good girl isn't as easy as it may seem, especially when she's rescued by one very hot firefighter and subsequently spends more and more time with him. Being bad never looked so good if it meant being with Max Butler.

Max Butler may not be the poster boy for how firefighters should behave but he does his job and he does it well. Saving a young woman from a burning building was simply part of that job...until everyone finds out that it was none other than country music star Kit Landry. The fact that Max has been a fan of hers and that he's fantasized about her makes their spending time together even more memorable. But Max no longer believes in love and commitment, no matter how tempting having something more with Kit may be.

Ah, don't you just love it when a freebie you got on Amazon/B&N/Kobo turns out to be a squee-worth read? Temptation is the first novel in the Nashville Nights series by bestselling author Robin Covington and is about a famous country singer and songwriter trying to break free from the mold those around her have forced her to remain in for far too long and a firefighter who has been known to break the rules time and again and refuses to be boxed in by regulations or expectations whether at work or play. I loved, loved, loved this story and couldn't help grinning like an idiot by the time I finished reading because Kit and Max just seemed absolutely perfect together. The beginning of their non-relationship was unconventional and neither of them was looking for happily-ever-after, making sure to keep things casual and with a three-week expiration date. But, as we romance readers know, you can't really put a time stamp on your feelings, and try as these two might, there was no denying the sizzling connection between them.

Both Kit and Max have their respective secrets, though Kit's could potentially and adversely affect her career, and their past relationships have left them with emotional scars. The whole temporary setup has worked for them before and prefer being open and honest about how temporary things are supposed to be with them. However, once their feelings begin to crave something with more permanence, dealing with the unexpected development leaves both of them unable to communicate, keeping everything on lock down. Max had a better support system, courtesy of his family and his best friend and fellow firefighter Dean, and poor Kit only had her best friend and personal assistant Bridget, but they were part of a cast of supporting characters who were more than mere fluff characters and obviously wanted both Max and Kit to be happy plus were never afraid to make them face harsh truths when needed. If Dean didn't have a girlfriend, I would have wanted him to have his own story with Bridget, but that would be too predictable.

This book was such a pleasant surprise and the fact that I was able to get it when it was offered for free on Amazon is an added bonus. The story wasn't the usual bad boy and good girl or famous person and non-famous person fall for one another trope. Robin Covington spun a tale that had both heart and heat along with humor and angst. This is the second full-length novel but third story overall (counting the novella One Little Kiss, which I read when it was originally part of the multi-authored Get Lucky anthology), of the author's that I've had the pleasure of reading and I must say that I've enjoyed each and every one of them. I've now added all her back titles to my never-ending TBR list and will hopefully be able to get through them before the year ends (hey, it's a really long-ass list!). As far as Temptation is concerned, it was a great beginning to a series that I'm already looking forward to and while it may no longer be a freebie, I do recommend you check the book out. This gets five stars and is a 2015 favorite. ♥
