After finding that she was pregnant, Cassandra Pierce was on her way to find support and understanding from her best friend when she gets slams her car into a tree in the town of Keaton. She's quickly rescued by Jason Bradley and after being taken to the emergency room, she finds him waiting and offers his family home to her while she recuperates. In the weeks that follow, Cassie grows closer to both Jase and his parents and their feelings move from friendship to something more. But both Cassie and Jase are keeping secrets from each other, secrets that they fear will have the other running as far away as possible.
Away is the first novel in the Keaton series by B.A. Wolfe and is a new adult (NA) romance about twenty-one-year-old Cassie and twenty-two-year-old Jase, a city girl and country guy who fall in love with one another but have secrets that could prove to be devastating to their fledgling love and friendship. Readers learn of Cassie's secret early on--she's become pregnant after a one-night stand--and the secret is one that Jase's mother, who just happened to be Cassie's attending nurse the day of the accident, knows. It is Jase's secret that carries with it the greatest weight and will be the greatest catalyst in Cassie's present and future. There aren't too many hints as to what the secret is and that alone surprised me because based on my knowledge of what he was hiding, there should have been some sort of clue. I'm not really able to go into any specifics because I don't want to spoil the book for anyone out there who has yet to read it.
One of my favorite things about this novel was the ending, yet another thing I can't go into but suffice it to say that I liked it because it was different and risky and yet the author decided to go with it, something I appreciated. I know some readers were left in tears while reading the book and I actually feel kinda bad that I didn't cry or get teary-eyed. It could be due to my lack of an emotional connection with Cassie, although I absolutely fell in love with Jase. Cassie came off as immature and overly needy most of the time and I couldn't really fathom why she relied so heavily on the kindness of strangers to the point that she was already taking advantage of them. After all, wasn't she on her way to see her best friend? She had no job and the money she had was going to cover the repairs to her car, and she just kept living off Jase's family. Jase was too good to her and there were too many moments I felt she didn't deserve his love.
There are points in the book that tended to drag, which then leads to me feeling tempted to skim, and then there was the unnecessary inclusion of Jase's ex-girlfriend. I get the need for conflict but you would think that Cassie's pregnancy and Jase's situation would have been more than enough. Still, I kept on reading mainly because of Jase because there was something about a true blue good guy that calls to me and it was difficult to resist him. Overall, this book was enjoyable and the story is unique enough, especially since this was the author's first ever published work. I more than appreciated the direction the author took and that the ending was a different sort of cliffhanger, leaving you with the idea that there's a whole 'nother story waiting to be told (and yes, there is a sequel). If you're looking for a close to perfect book boyfriend to snuggle with this weekend, Jason Dean "Jase" Bradley in Away may fit the bill. This gets four stars. ♥
