Review: "Kissing Mr. Wrong" by Kerri Carpenter (Wrong Man #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by Entangled Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Vanessa "V" Hewitt has just lost her job and is having a few drinks at her favorite bar to take her mind off her misery. Soon enough, she's distracted by something more intoxicating--the gorgeous stranger sitting at the end of the bar. When he rescues her from what he thought was her attempt at ending her life by jumping off a bridge, she learns that his name is John and that there's a definite spark between the two of them. One kiss leads to the most intense and most memorable night either of them have ever experienced. But that's all it is...one night. They knew it could be nothing more, even though they both wished for more.

Fast forward three months later and Vanessa is busy helping her best friend Jess Campbell with engagement and wedding plans. Vanessa wishes she could take away some of the sadness Jess feels over her younger brother Jack and how he hasn't visited her after having returned home from deployment a few months ago. Then on her last night as a bartender, John, the guy she spent that one unforgettable night with, returns, and the things he says makes her piece things together...John is Jack; Jack is John. The hottie that Vanessa wants is her best friend's younger brother...making him the totally wrong guy for her.

Kissing Mr. Wrong is a contemporary romance by Kerri Carpenter and is, I'm assuming, the first in a series called Wrong Man. Vanessa and John meet and end up spending a night to remember together. John makes it clear that he isn't staying in town and that he has to leave come morning, circumstances that Vanessa accepts. They were probably not expecting to have such a memorable one-night stand but that they did and it takes three months for their paths to cross again. This time, though, Vanessa realizes that John is her best friend's little brother but that she calls him by his family nickname of Jack, something which is more than plausible because it is a known nickname for those with the birth name or first name of John (e.g. the late U.S. President John F. Kennedy who was fondly called "Jack" by family and friends).

Vanessa is somewhat horrified by the thought of sleeping with her best friend's brother because she knows how disgusted Jess would be if she ever found out that the guy whose "assets" Vanessa has talked about at length (pun intended) was actually Jess's brother. Even with the undeniable connection between them, she's not ready to risk her friendship with Jess in order to be with the one guy who's never been far from her thoughts since they met three months ago. Plus, John may be a great guy but even he acknowledges that the idea of his sister hooking up with one of his friends would give him the heebie-jeebies. I know where they're coming from because I recall friends of mine crushing on my brother and I flat-out informed them that there would be no lusting over him because it was simply icky AND they were too young for him.

This was a fairly quick read but one that I enjoyed a great deal because the story was sweet and John and Vanessa were really likable lead characters who were torn between their feelings for each other and not wanting to hurt Jess. I liked that this was realistic in terms of declarations of whatever thoughts and feelings Vanessa and John had, because, let's face it, they had spent one night together prior to meeting again and they certainly weren't pining away for one another all that time. Their lives had gone on even though they did wonder what the other must be doing or how things would have gone differently had they gotten each other's contact information. This may be a short book but nothing felt amiss and the ending left me quite a happy and satisfied camper. Kissing Mr. Wrong is a worthwhile read and gets 4.5 stars. ♥
