Review: Five Reasons to Go by Candace Knoebel (Risky Hearts #2)

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via InkSlinger PR.

While reading Ten Reasons to Stay, I had a feeling Jack Swanson would getting his story told. That story unfolds in Five Reasons to Go, the conclusion to Candace Knoebel's Risky Hearts duet. This was it. This was going to be Jack's chance to share his tale--to make me understand the motivations behind the choices he made and to see what his aftermath looked like after his marriage to Corinne ended. Unfortunately, this book fell short of my expectations.

Jack Swanson wanted an open marriage, and his wife agreed, wanting to please him, hoping it would be what brought a spark back in their relationship. Instead, Jack meets Jessica Krause. She's in an open marriage as well and has two children that can never know about it. The attraction is immediate, the pull undeniable, but falling in love with someone who's married is complicated, and when everything comes to a head, who will stay and who will go?

I really wanted to like this more than I did. Had I not read the first book, I would have disliked Jack just as much this time around. There isn't a whole lot of actual explanation as to the open marriage he wanted with Corinne. Instead, we get more of Jessica's background story, and that's all well and good, but I wanted much more of Jack's because he was a far more integral character in the book that started this whole duet. But yeah, that was lacking.

Jack and Jessica's story is told from both their perspectives, split in unequal parts--when they met and were seeing each other every Thursday and then when they meet again two years after they parted ways, with both their marriages over and done with. The latter definitely outweighed the former, and I did enjoy it, but something was still lacking, like I never really got to know them as much as I hoped to. So, Five Reasons to Go only gets three stars. ♥
