Review: "Mermen" by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff (Mermen #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by Rock Star Lit PR in exchange for an honest review.

Roen Doran is a billionaire and a bastard and he makes no apologies for either of those facts. He's ruthless and always gets what he wants, regardless of what he has to do to get it. When his father leaves him an island isolated in the middle of the ocean, he decides to check it out even though there's a part of him that doesn't want to have anything to do with his father. What Roen discovers is that the island is inhabited by men who believe they're there to protect and serve the island and that they're holding one woman captive.

Liv Stratton survived the sinking of a ship she was on while doing research for her dissertation but she's not sure if she'll be able to survive the inhabitants of the island she's now on. There's more to the island and the men than meets the eye and the water they're making her drink isn't your regular tap water or even the expensive bottled kind. When Roen finds her, she realizes that he's more than the cold-hearted man he's known to be, but will they be able to make it off the island or will it hold both of them prisoners?

Mermen is the first book in the series of the same title by bestselling author Mimi Jean Pamfiloff. Admittedly, the unique synopsis grabbed my attention and the story was, indeed, very different from what I was expecting. If you're thinking men with scaly fish tails and fins when you see the title, think again. Neither is this a sentimental tale similar to either the original Hans Christian Andersen or the Disney-fied The Little Mermaid children's story. Thank goodness the author was creative because majority of the mermen portrayed in different kinds of mythology are made out to be highly unattractive or undesirable.

The story definitely piques your curiosity and will make you want to understand what the heck is going on and what it is the island truly wants and symbolizes. There were a few surprises in the book and I liked how the author kept me guessing as to whether Roen was being himself or if he was trying to be a step ahead of those who wanted him to plead allegiance to their island. Liv being a strong counterpart to Roan was a bonus because even though she did need rescuing in the beginning of the story, she could definitely hold her own against him and the more domineering alpha mermen and wasn't the type to go without a fight.

Now, you know how I feel about cliffhangers, and yes, dear bookaholics, this does end in a whopper of a cliffhanger. As far as my understanding goes, the sequel was released the same time this first book was, which is a good thing for those who are like me and get easily frustrated by evil cliffhangers. However, I did hear that the second book also ends in another dreaded cliffhanger, so I'm contemplating whether or not I should wait for the final book in the trilogy to be released. If you don't care about cliffhangers or if you simply want something original to read, I suggest you give Mermen a look-see. This gets four stars. ♥
