Review: "Dangerous Tease" by Avery Flynn (The Laytons #3)

Note: This ARC was provided by Rock Star Lit PR in exchange for an honest review.

History professor Sam Layton is the serious one among his siblings and he knows that he can come off as a stick in the mud, but he doesn't really care. On a trip to Las Vegas with his brothers Hank and Chris, Sam meets a tattooed waitress named Josie Winarsky and is immediately drawn to her. He can't really understand why since his taste usually runs to the more academic type of woman. Maybe opposites really do attract but what was a memorable night together ends abruptly when an innocent comment from Josie causes Sam to accuse her of seducing him to help her go searching for a his ancestor's lost treasure.

While Josie Winarsky may need money in order to help her brother out after a loan shark claims he's owed forty thousand dollars, she had no clue that a joke about treasure hunting would have Sam Layton going ballistic on her. So what if he lives in Dry Creek, Nebraska? She makes sure to avoid him at all costs, but when the loan shark threatens her once again, she knows that he best bet to have funds to pay him off is to talk to Sam and ask for his help in finding the treasure. However, will they be able to get their hands on the treasure before the men after Josie get their hands on her and make good on their threats?

Dangerous Tease is the third book in The Laytons series from author Avery Flynn, a title that was originally released in 2012 as Passion Creek. This story features Sam Layton, a college professor, and Josie Winarsky, a cocktail waitress, and the two meet in Las Vegas while Sam's on vacation with his two brothers, Hank and Chris. This story overlaps with some of the events in the second book, so if you've read that one, you'll recall Josie being introduced as a minor character in Vegas and then re-appears in Dry Creek. Josie may not be the usual type of woman Sam has been known to be with before but there's something about her that brings out the more passionate and emotional part of him, something he's kept bottled up ever since something happened to their family the summer he was only twelve years old.

I've always felt as if there was more to Sam than being the quiet, serious brother and his personal story was heartbreaking and one that weighed heavier on him than on his other siblings. Josie was able to create a balance of sorts because Sam really needed to smile more and to experience more joy in his life. This had more of an Indiana Jones series or Romancing the Stone/Jewel of the Nile feel to it compared to the two other books, but the heat level was definitely at par with its predecessors. I'm not sure if there's a fourth book slated for release but I certainly hope there will be because it would be sad if Chris's story isn't told. A guy as happy-go-lucky as him may just have had a dark episode in his life and he deserves to have as much of a happily ever after as his other siblings. Dangerous Tease was a fun read and gets four stars. ♥
