Review: "Beyond the Cut" by Sarah Castille (Sinner's Tribe Motorcycle Club #2)

Note: This ARC was provided by St. Martin's Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Dawn Delgado is more than familiar with how things work for a woman involved with someone in the motorcycle club or MC world. She was once married to the vice president of the Devil's Brethren MC and endured his abuse until he decided to turn on their twin daughters, making her realize it was time to leave. Unfortunately, her ex-husband punished her by gaining custody of the very daughters he never wanted nor cared for after Dawn was wrongly accused of being a drug addict. Now, she lives for the handful of hours a week she gets with her girls, often having to pay her sister-in-law, with whom the children reside, money just so she can have much more time with them.

Apart from her multiple jobs in order to stay financially afloat and trying to regain custody of her daughters, Dawn doesn't have time for any man--especially when the man happens to be Cade O'Connor, treasurer for the Sinner's Tribe MC, and someone she hasn't been able to get out of her head since they slept together, not once, but twice. And even though it's been a year since Dawn ended their liaisons, Cade knows exactly how she feels because he's never quite forgotten her either. Learning her MC past with her ex-husband makes him all the more protective of her and her two girls. But now their relationship has sparked a new war, one that Cade will do anything to win.

Beyond the Cut is the second novel in the Sarah Castille-penned Sinner's Tribe Motorcycle Club series and continues the side story that began in the first novel involving Cade O'Connor, the Sinner's Tribe treasurer and one of Jagger Knight's closest friends, and Dawn Delgado, Arianne Hunter's best friend. There's a definite connection between Cade and Arianne, one that the people around them have noticed, but Cade has always had a reputation of being somewhat of a manwhore and Dawn doesn't want to become further involved with someone belonging to the MC community. Still, even after a year since they were last together, the spark between them still burns as hot as ever, making their re-connection an inevitable event. Finding out that Dawn used to be married to someone from the rival Devil's Brethren MC adds a complication to Cade and Dawn's new relationship, especially since her ex wants her back and enjoys immunity from any harm that Cade may wish to inflict.

As protective as Cade is of Dawn and her kids, there's only so much he can do, what with her not being his old lady, a status Dawn herself refuses to go back to. The complexities of the MC culture are further explained in this sequel, especially when it comes to politics involved when one club plans on patching over to another and how the women and children of members are covered or not covered by protection from the club. I like how the story delves deeper into the MC world and how there's a hierarchy when it comes to the women and how they're affected by what goes on in the MC. Like Arianne before her, Dawn is a formidable heroine, one who refuses to step aside or to be pushed around, having become stronger after leaving her ex-husband. She craves her independence and doesn't necessarily want to be some sort of damsel in distress, needing to be saved, but she's also a woman with needs and one who knows when it's time to ask for help when it's clear that she can't do it alone.

I love it when a book throws in a few surprises and this one most certainly did, showing me that it had more story to give when I thought everything had been said and done. The lead characters are also complex and have back stories that had me falling even more in love with them, but then, that's par for the course when it comes to these Sinners and their women. The action and violence is still very much present as is the drama and humor that makes the Sinner's Tribe a motorcycle club worth reading about. Even though the Black Jacks MC isn't front and center here, their presence is very much felt and they do play a pivotal role of sorts in the events affecting the Sinner's Tribe in general and Cade and Dawn specifically, so the series story arc is going strong. I'm curious to see how many books are going to be part of this series because I'm seriously hoping it won't be just a trilogy. Hey, I'm always for "the more, the merrier." Beyond the Cut was fun and intense and I'm giving it five stars. ♥
