Review: UnRidden by Cat Johnson (Studs in Spurs #1)

UnRidden is my first Cat Johnson and I'm afraid it fell short of my expectations, especially given that I've heard good things about some of the author's more recent books. This was the story of almost thirty-five-year-old romance writer named Jenna Block who decides to do some hands-on research for the new novel she's writing after her agent advises her to come up with a book that had cowboys in it. When she meets best friends Slade Bower and Mustang Jackson, both professional bull riders and nearly twenty-seven and twenty-five, respectively, she gets more than she bargained for but intends to hold on tight for the ride of a lifetime with her two cowboys.

My main issue when it comes to ménages is the difficulty I find in believing that all three members within the relationship love each other equally. In this Studs in Spurs series starter, however, that wasn't even an issue. There was one couple that seemingly had more amorous feelings towards each other while the third member of their threesome appeared to be in just for fun. But see, my problem was that it didn't feel as if there was any sort of deep connection going on. Also, Jenna is a decade older than Mustang and a couple of years minus that than Slade, and yet this romance writer didn't seem to even know where her g-spot was and didn't even believe in its existence prior to the whole threesome thing. Hey, maybe her books are clean romances so writing sex scenes wasn't a requirement, but yeah, it seemed weird. The one who doesn't end up becoming part of the final couple and one other supporting character in the story do have me curious as to who they end up with, so I may continue with the next two books in the series and see how those go. Three stars out of a possible five stars for UnRidden. ♥
