Review: Part-Time Lover by Lauren Blakely

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

What if she feels the same? What if she's starting to figure out that this marriage of convenience has turned, unexpectedly, into something more?
I need to give her time. I need to give her the chance to figure out what I've already learned: we could be more than a deal.

If you've already read bestselling author Lauren Blakely's Wanderlust, then thirty-year-old half-British, half-Danish, former financial whiz turned translator Christian Ellison and thirty-four-year-old half-French, half-American, blogger of A Scentsual Woman and advertising agency owner Elise Durand should be familiar characters. That being said, you don't necessarily need to read Wanderlust--although it's one of my recommended romantic comedy reads this year!--in order to enjoy Christian and Elise's story in Part-Time Lover. I had previously read the free prequel novella, Almost Lover, a few days prior to reading the advanced reader copy of this full-length novel. However, since the aforementioned novella makes up the first five chapters of this new novel, you don't need to read the free prequel; if you have read it, you can skip those first five chapters and dive right into the chapter six.

When Christian and Elise first locked eyes on each other, it was across a canal in Denmark, with Christian sans clothing and Elise enjoying the view. One year later, Christian and Elise meet again; this time around, he's fully clothed, but that connection between them remains palpable. But Elise isn't looking for any sort of committed relationship with any man, not even when the chemistry is as strong as the one she shares with Christian. All she can offer him is a no-strings-attached sort of affair. No expectations, no promises--no hearts broken. While he's surprised by her proffered arrangement, Christian would have crazy to reject it, not when he wanted to spend as much time as he could with Elise. And everything goes well...until the time comes when both of them need something more--marriage, albeit just temporary. But what happens when one wants a permanent arrangement?

Christian and Elise gave Griffin Thomas and Joy Lively from Wanderlust a run for their money in terms of being as endearing as they were entertaining. I'm going to have to call it a tie between the two couples because I refuse to play favorites (this time around). This isn't your usual "fake marriage" kind of love story. Christian and Elise were already involved with one another, even though it was a commitment-free type of relationship. These two were destined to be together and even though there was a whole lot of denial on Elise's end, the heart--and true love--wins out, as it always does when it comes to Lauren Blakely's love stories. From Elise catching sight of a naked Christian along the canal in Denmark to the sigh-worthy ending that made me believe that neither time nor distance can stand in the way of a forever kind of love, Part-Time Lover proved to be one five-plus-starred winner. ♥
