Review: Mister Tonight by Kendall Ryan

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

Mister Tonight, Kendall Ryan's newest standalone romance, has turned out to be one of my favorite reads from the bestselling author. Originally titled Birthday Sex, we meet Kate on the eve of her thirtieth birthday celebrating with her two best friends at a bar. Maybe her two besties are right--a bit of birthday sex is exactly what she needs to ring in the big 3-0, and once she locks eyes with the gorgeous guy named Hunter, she decides to make him her prey, erm, present. Unfortunately, what promised to be a night of hot sex goes unfulfilled when Hunter's five-year-old daughter Maddie catches them in the act. At least neither one of them has to ever face the other after that humiliating moment. Well, that is until Kate comes face to face with her brand-new landlord--Hunter. With them becoming neighbors and Maddie not having forgotten the woman cuddling her dad a wee bit too closely, Hunter and Kate decide to keep things purely platonic. The attraction between them, however, doesn't wane. It's doubtful hooking up was what was meant by loving thy neighbor...

One of my favorite story angles is that of the single father. There's just something about having a guy who makes his child his top priority. The fact that Kate isn't exactly looking for love, what more an instant family was a nice twist to this story, and seeing how she evolves from a single woman distancing herself from commitment to slowly but surely falling for both Hunter AND Maddie was one of my favorite things about this book. I think the fact that nothing ever felt rushed about Hunter and Kate's relationship and that Maddie was rather wary about Kate were part of what made me like this book even more than I already did. With a trope as familiar as the single dad one, Kendall Ryan giving her latest standalone just enough of her own creative touch allowed it to be an even more enjoyable romance read. With it not being an overly long novel, this is the kind of love story that you can curl up with for an hour or two and simply fall in love with the characters and the tale that they have to tell. Mister Tonight was the romance fix that I needed, and it easily gets 4.5 out of five stars. ♥
