Review: The Baby Blitz by Lex Martin (Varsity Dads #3)

I've been itching to get my hands on Michael Oliver's book for what feels like forever--okay, it was only since July of last year--and now, it's finally here! The Baby Blitz is the third standalone companion novel in Lex Martin's Varsity Dads football college romance series, and its main characters are the aforementioned Michael Oliver, better known as Olly, and Magnolia Morales, also known as Maggie. He's a senior and she's a junior, and they've known each other for years, thanks in large part to the fact that he's her brother's best friend. Maggie and Olly were friends once upon a time as well, but that all changed with one single act of betrayal on his end. Four acrimonious years later, they've done their best to stay out of each other's way, but when they're paired during his sister's wedding, they agree on a truce that leads to a night of simply letting go and giving in. Neither of them quite expected how life-changing that evening--and two pink lines--would be for both of them. Will they be able to figure out how to be more than enemies?
Oh, but how Olly and Maggie went through the wringer on their way to their truly hard-earned happily-ever-after! These two may have had secret feelings for each other, but with all that history between them, there was an understandable bit of wariness that lingered. There's a great deal of back and forth that goes on, but I understood why, especially given that they needed to learn how to communicate better, especially after finding out that they were pregnant, ergo their lives would be forever entwined. I loved having a ringside seat as they tried to navigate the ins and outs of being two people who spent as little time together as possible over the past four years to not just being friends and lovers but parents and partners as well. We get glimpses of the first two couples in the series plus recurring supporting characters, but just like The Varsity Dad Dilemma and Tight Ends & Tiaras before it, The Baby Blitz works well as a standalone (but read the first two novels anyway because they're awesome). Lex Martin so did not disappoint. 4.5 stars.
