Review: End of Story by Kylie Scott

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by Harlequin.

End of Story is the newest standalone novel from bestselling author Kylie Scott and published by Harlequin. This contemporary romance has a hint of magical realism to it, and carries with it a different feel compared to majority of Scott's back list. This also includes The Beginning of the End, the prequel to Susie Bowen and Lars's (Viking-like contractor and best friend to Susie's ex-boyfriend without a last name, and not in a Prince or Bono kinda way) story. It's found at the end of the full-length novel, so you're going to have to head that way before reading End of Story since the events there play out six months prior. You could end up hating the ex but may be curious about what happens to Susie and Lars.

When thirty-year-old Susie Bowen beloved aunt and namesake, Susan, leaves her the house that holds a lot of wonderful memories, Susie knows she's going to need professionals working on it. She isn't all that thrilled when it turns out that the one originally set to work on the house has a family emergency. His replacement? None other than the Ex's bestie. She and thirty-five-year-old Lars actually had a pretty good friendship going, but things are beyond awkward, especially since he was a witness to the clusterfuck that was her break-up with his best friend. Then he finds a divorce decree hidden between the walls of Susie's inherited house--and it has Lars and Susie listed as the couple. Neither one knows how it got there or why this is happening, but it seems their story is merely beginning. Can they change the ending?

There was a lot to love about Susie and Lars's story, and at the top of that list are the main characters. The prequel dropped hints that while they may have been with other people, there was an inkling of a connection between Susie and Lars. I'm not saying it was immediately romantic; more like they just clicked. Seeing them in the novel go from moments of awkwardness to rekindling the friendship they once forged and then falling in love was highly entertaining. I love when an author steps out of their comfort zone and then delivers a winner of a romance read. Kudos, Kylie Scott. 4.5 stars for End of Story.
