Review: The Dom Who Came in from the Cold by Lexi Blake (Masters and Mercenaries: Reloaded #5)
Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.
The Dom Who Came in from the Cold is the fifth (and final?) novel in Lexi Blake's Masters and Mercenaries: Reloaded series--and the 26th in the Masters and Mercenaries book universe--and features a second-chance romance between Kyle Hawthorne and Mae Beatrice Vaughn. He's former Special Forces turned CIA operative, and she a cyber security expert with McKay-Taggart Security Services. Eighteen months ago, he had been part of McKay-Taggart as well, needing a change after learning that the woman he had asked to marry him turned out to be an all-too dangerous enemy. That forced sabbatical would lead to his path crossing with MaeBe's and the two become close...until his past returns and threatens the woman he's falling for. Kyle does the only thing he thinks would keep MaeBe safe--even if it means breaking both their hearts. A year and a half later, he's back, but the woman he desperately wants no longer resembles the one he left.
I swear, Lexi Blake's Masters and Mercenaries book world is one of the most addictive I've ever come across in all my decades of reading. How she's able to maintain the same level of romance and suspense over so many novels and novellas boggles the mind, but maybe that's why she's the bestselling author, and I'm the reader. Kyle and MaeBe's story had me at the edge of my seat, with everything playing out from the third-person viewpoints plus another major character's point of view, which I consider to be quite fascinating. I loved the character development, especially with certain realizations on Kyle's end as to his actions eighteen months ago and the present and MaeBe's growth post-Kyle's "disappearance". Of course, the Masters and Mercenaries OGs were present and accounted for but The Dom Who Came in from the Cold was all Kyle and MaeBe. Five stars.
