Review: Whispers of You by Catherine Cowles (Lost & Found #1)

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

The new year brings a new series from one of my favorite authors, and it's gotten off to a fantastic start! Whispers of You is the first novel in Catherine Cowles's Lost & Found series, and it delivers on that wonderful balance of romance and suspense that's become synonymous with this author's writing. If you've read Fractured Sky, book five in the Tattered & Torn series, you may recall a supporting character named Holt Hartley; he's the male main character in this new series starter. Holt is twenty-eight and started his own private security company after leaving the military. While he's been home several times over the past decade, this is the first time since then where he'll be staying in Cedar Ridge for longer than a few hours. He has his reasons for staying away, but with his family needing him, Holt makes his return--for how long, no one, not even Holt, has any idea. He knew coming back would mean he would see the only woman he's ever loved--and the one he failed when she needed him most. But Wren Williams isn't the same girl she was at sixteen. He wants nothing more than to show her how much she still means to him, but it's not only Holt who's got his heart set on Wren. Someone is dead set on finishing what they started that night ten years ago.

Oh, the feels! I loved Wren and Holt. These two were robbed over ten years together, and Holt's misplaced guilt certainly didn't help things either. While they went on to lead separate lives, they would forever be entwined by their love for each other and by the events that shattered them and their hometown a decade ago. I appreciated seeing Holt put in the effort to reconcile and reconnect with his family while also taking the necessary steps to show those who mattered most what his intentions were. In short, he spoke louder with his actions than words. And then there's Wren, and goodness, but this woman had such strength in her. She endured a great deal when everything happened back when she was sixteen and Holt was eighteen, but she never allowed any of it to break her spirit. She truly was a survivor and not a victim. The romance and suspense were so amazingly intertwined, but then, I've already come to expect that from Catherine Cowles. She gives us a beautiful story about true love, redemption, family, and moving forward while also providing just enough to pique our curiosity about the rest of the recurring cast of characters. She's given the Lost & Found a noteworthy beginning, and I cannot wait for everything yet to come. Five stars go to Whispers of You.
