Review: Heat Trap by JL Merrow (Plumber's Mate #3)

The heat is getting to Tom Paretski and Phil Morrison in the third installment of JL Merrow’s romantic mystery suspense series, Plumber’s Mate. When you think of Great Britain, you think rain more than you would heatwave, but that’s exactly what we have here. Throw in the shocker of a secret Tom unearthed at the end of the second book and a revelation from Phil’s past that has Tom pausing and wondering just how much he knows his boyfriend. Hidden transgressions are just part of what’s weighing on Tom and Phil. When they’re brought in to help out a barmaid at their favorite haunt, they find themselves unwittingly dragged into the whole mess, receiving threats by a smiling, relentless man who doesn’t seem to care what he does in order to get what—and who—he wants. By the end, the heat may burn them all.

Who is Tom Paretski? That’s a question Tom finds himself trying to avoid addressing especially since he’s not sure if he really wants to go scrounging around for answers. After all, finding out that his mother cheated on the man he’s always believed was his father only to discover that he isn’t—at least as far as the biological aspect is concerned—would throw anyone for a loop. But he needs to put that on the back burner in order to figure out the guy who doesn’t deal with rejection well. Only now, he and Phil are being subtly threatened as well and when Tom’s life is put at risk, Phil can’t help but worry. But what would Phil do to protect Tom? Would he physically assault someone? That’s not the kind of man Phil is…right? When an incident from his past is brought to light, Tom cannot help but keep the man he loves at arm’s length.

This series just keeps getting better and better and more and more addictive with each new book I read. I look forward to both the new mystery that the author has in store for readers as well as seeing how far Tom and Phil have progressed as a couple. I felt bad for Phil in this book, especially because I felt that Tom had prejudged him and took the word of someone else over what he already knows in his heart about the man he’s been sharing his life with for months. The mystery here is probably what I would consider the best of the lot so far. Just when you think you’ve made up your mind about the obvious suspect, something happens that makes you take a step back to re-analyze everything that’s happened. And goodness, how I adore the other couples in this series (i.e. Gary and Darren and Cherry and Greg). Heat Trap gets five stars! ♥
