Review: Kicker by Josie Kerr (DS Fight Club #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by Enticing Journey Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

Kicker is the first novel in the DS Fight Club series from Josie Kerr and is a spin-off of her Second Chance Neighbors series, which I have yet to read and after glimpsing the three couples involved in said series, I've added the three books to my to-be-read list. This new series starter is about a twenty-nine-year-old aspiring mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter named Trevor Mashburn, better known as Tig, and a thirty-five-year-old forensic accountant named Charlotte Markham. Tig struggles with the burdens placed upon his shoulders by his good-for-nothing stepfather, taking on illegal underground fights in order to have enough money to save the family farm. On the other hand, Charlotte has spent all her life under her parents' thumb, doing their bidding with a practiced smile and poised grace. Two seemingly different people from opposing walks of life, but Tig and Charlotte have far more in common than they realize. Will they be able to inspire each other to exceed the expectations of all others and aspire to be great together?

If you're looking for a story that focuses more on the MMA aspect than on the romance, I suggest that you move along. This book is about the romance that ensues between the main characters, Tig and Charlotte, and how they are able to overcome the barriers that have kept them stuck for far too long and to finally move forward to pursue their own dreams. The age difference wasn't as played up as I would have expected since the sticking point in their burgeoning relationship is the obvious disapproval of their respective sets of parents. Charlotte may be thirty-five but she's lived such a cloistered and controlled life that has her begging to break free but it takes forever for her to do so. In the case of Tig, he was repeatedly advised what it was he was supposed to do and he had many an opportunity to do right thing but never took it until much later. So yes, there was a lot of hemming and hawing with both Charlotte and Tig, but thankfully, they came to their senses and had a strong group of friends for support. Four stars for Kicker. ♥
