Review: Love Child by Kat Austen

Note: This ARC as provided by Ardent PRose in exchange for an honest review.

With each new story she gives us, I find myself loving Kat Austen’s books even more. The latest one, Love Child, is definitely my favorite so far. Not only does it offer up a story line I’ve never come across before, it’s written well and has two main characters that I grew quite fond of. Thirty-five-year-old Abel Lockwood has achieved a great deal of success in his career, but there is one thing that he wants: a child of his own. This leads him to procure the services of Love Child, a private agency that pairs a single father with a woman who fits his preferred profile to become the mother of his child. Abel knows exactly who he wants from the minute he reads her file: Adeline Matthews. His gut instinct tells him she's the woman meant to be the one to give him the child he so desires, but what he doesn't know is that twentysomething Adeline has had him as her top pick as well. But even before the contracts are signed, there's something more working between the two. Could the child they make be borne not merely out of necessity, but out of love?

I loved this short story. The story was unique, and yes, there is a story, a fact that I cannot reiterate enough since many seem to think these popular quick reads sprouting about are more about the sex than anything else. The sex is a given, and whenever it happens, it's hot and dirty but also passionate and loving. The idea of a single, successful, insanely wealthy man wanting to have a child but no longer desiring to go through the ups and downs of finding a woman to be in a relationship with, one that may or may not lead to marriage and a family, and turning to Love Child caught my attention easily. Abel and Adeline are also great main characters, albeit Adeline is the typical virginal, young woman that you find in a lot of these quick reads. Their personalities mesh and the manner in which the love between them develops had that mix of sweet and steamy that I look for. Without a doubt, this novella sits atop my list of favorite quick reads and I can't wait to see what Kat Austen has up her sleeve next. I'm giving Love Child five stars. ♥
