Review: Legend: Set in Stone by Kylie C. Stewart (Legend #1)

Legend: Set in Stone is the first novel in the fantasy romance series entitled Set in Stone from first-time author Kylie C. Stewart and if you're a fan of the Arthurian legend, this will certainly be something I encourage you to check out. I first became curious about King Arthur after having read Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in school. With the plethora of literature, films, and television productions made about King Arthur and the other famous characters involved in his tale, it'll be easy enough for you to, at the very least, get a bit of information about this legendary leader. I'm saying this because I think having even a minimum knowledge of Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, Merlin, and the more notable names in the stories will be beneficial in you having a better reading experience when you go into this first in an exciting series.

Alexandria York is an artist who, while on horseback with her best friend, finds herself on the property of the Duke of Avalon. There have been many stories and rumors about the mysterious man, and while Allie's curiosity is more than piqued, there is another mysterious man she seeks to gain the identity of. He invades her dreams but she willingly lets him in, welcoming him in a way that she's never welcomed any other man when she's awake. The man who occupies her thoughts when she's awake, leaves her confused. Why does he show such an intense interest in her? Why does he switch from showing he cares to pushing her away abruptly? And as if these two mysterious men are not enough, the return of the only man she has ever given her heart to--Lancer Rivers--returns, and both the Duke's and Allie's fates hang in the balance.

At the crux of this story is the secret that Avalon is hiding from Allie and it's a secret that we become privy to (ah, the perks of being a reader!) early on. Now, I won't go into too much detail but even without everything I said in the first paragraph, there are enough clues and hints as to how this book connects to one particular legend. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and loved how creative it was. While other authors put a modern twist to classic fairy tales, Kylie C. Stewart has taken things up a notch by adding mystery to what some believe is lore but many believe to be true and adding a modern touch to it. The story keeps you on your toes, and while it does end on a cliffhanger (gah!), you'll be invested into what happens with Avalon and Allie and how choices here will affect the rest of their story. 4.5 stars for Legend: Set in Stone.
