Review: Why Not? by Carey Heywood (Love Riddles #3)

Note: This ARC was provided by the author via Southern Belle Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

Why Not? is the third and latest release in the Love Riddles series written by bestselling author Carey Heywood. Those familiar with the first two books, Why Now? and Why Lie?, will recognize Reilly Whitmore as Jake Whitmore's younger sister and Kacey Albright's best friend and Brendan Lowell, who goes by the nickname Trip, who was a friend of Sydney Fairlane's and the source of Heath Mackey's jealousy. Trip was the boy Reilly had a crush on in high school, and his being two years older than her didn't dissuade her from thinking they were soul mates...but maybe catching him kissing a cheerleader may have crushed her teenage dreams of forever. Fast forward nearly a decade and a half later and Trip's there to offer comfort when Reilly needs it most, and it's a moment that quickly spirals into a hook-up that spawns more hook-ups. But can a hook-up ever really lead to love?

Reilly Whitmore and Trip Lowell may have gone to the same school and knew of each other, but their paths never really crossed, not until one night behind the local elementary school. The television reporter and the police officer make have one hot encounter, but while Trip may want more than one round with Reilly, he makes it clear that he can't and won't make her any promises. There are no declarations of love, no labels to their non-relationship. But then things slowly shift--from hand-holding to letting others know they're seeing each other. But it's one particular change that neither one of them was expecting, and it's a change that Reilly well knows Trip may never be ready for, not after he made it clear to her before. But even if he becomes open to the possibility, can Reilly be satisfied to be with a man who is by her side out of responsibility and obligation but does not seem to be in love with her?

This was a good addition to the series, and Reilly and Trip clearly have chemistry when they're together. I liked the direction their relationship went in, but I did feel as if there were hops, skips, and jumps throughout the progression of said relationship. What I mean is that we don't get all the details, just the highlights or the next milestone. Reilly and Trip are a couple that's easy enough to like, but I wish I was able to have gone on the actual journey with them as they discovered whatever feelings were developing on either end. Instead, one would act or react and then they would move on to the perceived next step of their relationship. There's a part in the story where I had a feeling it was going to go in the direction that it did, but can I just say that I was not a happy camper with the end of it because I had hopes for that character? Gah! Still, Why Not? was an enjoyable four-starred read. ♥
