Review: Why Lie? by Carey Heywood (Love Riddles #2)

Note: This ARC was provided by Southern Belle Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

Why Lie? is the second novel in the Carey Heywood-penned Love Riddles contemporary romance series and is the story of Sydney Fairlane and Heath Mackey, both of whom were introduced in the series starter, Why Now?, with Heath having more prominence since he was engaged to the female main character, Kacey Albright, and counted the male main character, Jake Whitmore, as one of his best friends. I know that there are some readers and reviewers who have chosen to keep Heath's identity secret in their reviews, and that's a personal choice they made, but because I already had an inkling that there was something different going on between Sydney and Heath while I was reading the first book, I decided to just put Heath's name out there. I don't think mentioning him is going to spoil this second book for anyone, especially if you've never read its predecessor. These are, after all, supposed to be standalones, although, I personally think that the two novels work better read in order because of overlapping events.

Sydney Fairlane thought herself to be in love with Heath Mackey. Their times together were intense and passionate, but it seems Sydney was wrong in her assessment of their relationship when word gets out that Heath is now engaged to someone else. The revelation brings about feelings of hurt and rejection and Sydney vows to never have anything to do with Heath. But there are deeper reasons for Heath's sudden engagement, and he had to do what he did, even if it meant ending the week-long fling he had with Sydney. The connection between Heath and Sydney was stronger than anything they may have experienced with anyone else, but family comes first for Heath and he makes what he thought was the right decision but turns out to be wrong. Fate steps in and now Heath realizes his mistake. But can he convince Sydney that what they shared meant just as much to him as it did to her and to give him another chance? Sydney may still love Heath, but the pain he caused her continues to run deep. Are his feelings true or just another lie?

This is a second chance love story with a twist. Can you fall in love after a week together? I believe the possibility is there and I'm sure there are couples who felt they fell in love the moment their eyes met. In the case of Heath and Sydney, Sydney was already there and it took a bit longer for Heath to catch up, but yes, there was definite chemistry and their tale had me intrigued from the get-go. Heath was an easy character to like in the first book and I'm glad that he did get his chance to finally have his own happy ending. Like Jake before him, he made a decision to give his family some peace of mind, even if it meant some self-sacrifice on his end. Sydney was the ideal woman for someone like him, even if they looked like they belonged on opposite ends of a spectrum. She was independent and strong-willed but also someone who loved with all her heart and was genuinely a good person. I confess that I enjoyed their story a bit more than I did Jake and Kacey's. Why Lie? was a good follow-up to Why Now? and it receives four stars. ♥
