Review: Counterbalance by Aidan Wayne

Note: This ARC was provided by Riptide Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

Counterbalance is the latest novella from author Aidan Wayne and it brings readers into the world of Cirque Brilliance, a troupe of performers specializing acrobatics and various other acts similar to those found in productions staged by the world-famous Cirque de Soleil. Here, John and Bao meet. John is a master rigger with the production while Bao is one of the newest acrobats to join, having been brought in from China. John is usually quiet, knowing full well that his scarred exterior has new artists to Cirque Brilliance avoiding him. But Bao isn't like everyone else and his genuine desire to become friends with John and to get to know him better have John dumbfounded and somehow feeling dubious over the attention. Can Bao show John his intentions are nothing but honorable and that they're perfect together?

I enjoyed the author's first novella and it's been followed up by another original story. Bao and John seem to have different dispositions, but this is mostly due to the reactions he's received in the past from other people. He chooses to be quiet but careful and concentrated in his work. Bao, on the other hand, has an exuberance, almost bursting with happiness, and his inquisitiveness shows how interested he is John. Theirs is a slow burn romance, and you wouldn't think that possible in a story as short as this one. But you see, this is what I like about Aidan Wayne's storytelling; you get, not just a complete story, but a compelling one to boot. Counterbalance was a nice, quick read and one I'm giving four out of five stars to. ♥
