Review: Compromising Her Position by Samanthe Beck (Compromise Me #1)

When Chelsea Wayne pushed Santa Claus into the supply closet, it was so she could have her way with him. Things didn't go according to plan since he ended up having his way with her, and the man under the Santa suit wasn't her on-again, off-again boyfriend. Instead, Santa was none other than Rafe St. Sebastian, the new owner of Las Ventanas, the resort hotel Chelsea was assistant manager at. And as if her evening couldn't get any worse, by the end of it, she finds out her boyfriend has been cheating on her for months and has gotten another co-worker pregnant, leaving Chelsea to resign from the job she loves immediately.

The impromptu tryst in a supply closet was just the beginning for Chelsea Wayne to work her way under Rafe St. Sebastian's skin. Now, he finds her working as the general manager at another resort hotel he plans on buying. Chelsea is to play the liaison between Rafe and the hotel's owners, and she's made it quite clear that she wants to keep everything as professional as possible. However, "professional" isn't what Rafe has in mind when he thinks of all the things he wants to do to and with Chelsea. This is all temporary, after all, and when the time comes to let go, they will. If only it were as easy as it sounded when it started.

Compromising Her Position is the first novel in the Compromise Me contemporary romance series from bestselling author Samanthe Beck and is about hotel manager Chelsea Wayne and hotel owner Rafe St. Sebastian. Chelsea and Rafe's love story begins in, of all places, a supply closet during the Christmas party for Las Ventanas employees. The hotel is the newest acquisition under Rafe's family-owned corporation and dressing as Santa is his way of showing goodwill to the employees. The costume is what Chelsea expected her boyfriend to be wearing when they were in the supply closet but ended up with Rafe instead.

I enjoyed this series starter and liked how Chelsea and Rafe were trying to toe the line between what was professional and what wasn't. Their initial coming together was certainly memorable, and while I believe that Chelsea wasn't aware that Rafe wasn't her boyfriend and that Rafe thought all Chelsea wanted was a quick hook-up in a dark closet, I think that at a certain point, Chelsea must have realized that it wasn't her boyfriend that was having sex with her because that's an act of intimacy that would give you some sort of familiarity with the person you usually have it with, right? At least, that's how I envisioned that scenario.

I know that there were quite a few reviews on Goodreads that stated they didn't appreciate the supply closet scene because it could be deemed as a case of non-consensual sex since Chelsea thought she was having sex with someone else. We all have our own opinions and we can all respectfully agree to disagree. I saw it as more of a case of mistaken identity on Chelsea's end and one of mistaken intentions on Rafe's end, without any malice whatsoever. When Chelsea found out that she actually had sex with Rafe and had she felt violated, she could have chosen to speak out and file a case against him. That's just my take on it.

I've always said that reviews are there for readers to be guided and they can choose to go as far as to let reviews help them to decided if they should or shouldn't read a book. My hope is that, in the case of this particular book, you give it a fair shake and form your own opinion afterward. It's a lighthearted office romance and I think that the author's intention was simply to come up with something fun for us to read this holiday season. With two driven, ambitious, and intelligent people trying to make a compromise between their careers and their love for each other, Compromising Her Position was a fab five-star read. ♥
