Review: A Shameless Little Con, A Shameless Little Lie, A Shameless Little Bet by Meli Raine (Shameless #1-#3)

I originally discovered bestselling author Meli Raine's writing via her Harmless trilogy--a spin-off of her Coming Home trilogy, which I've still got on my to-be-read list alongside her Breaking Away trilogy--and now she's completed her latest romantic suspense trilogy! Raine, who is actually bestselling author Julia Kent of Shopping for the Billionaire fame, has whipped up one heck of an exciting and intriguing ride with A Shameless Little Con, A Shameless Little Lie, and A Shameless Little Bet, all of which make up her Shameless trilogy, a spin-off of her Harmless books. You don't necessarily need to read the series prior to this latest one, but I do encourage that you read it anyway because knowing the entire back story which led Jane Borokov into becoming a virtual persona non grata in the eyes of the public and now has Silas Gentian watching her like a hawk will, I believe, make for an even better reading experience.

Because all three Shameless books are connected and cannot be read as standalones, I've decided to consolidate my reviews into just one for the entire series. As a whole, the trilogy is the story of Jane Borokov, who was implicated in a highly publicized scandal involving Lindsay Bosworth, daughter to a prominent politician and Jane's best friend. Even though she's been cleared, she's became a pariah, stained by the sins of her mother. Silas Gentian becomes her constant shadow. He doesn't trust her and seems to be waiting for her to slip up and prove to be the villain that everyone else has already judged her to be. She knows falling for Silas isn't a good idea, but it becomes an inevitability, even as he seems to hesitate to recognize bits and pieces of a singular truth: that Jane is, indeed, an innocent. By the time he realizes his misstep, will it be too late for Silas to protect Jane from those threatening her?

This trilogy has simply reiterated what I found out while reading the author's Harmless trilogy a couple of years ago: Meli Raine is a romantic suspense-writing wonder! From the moment I re-met Jane in the first book, the woman simply made me want to discover her story and every secret that she had. Was this all a con to her? Was she telling lies? Was this some elaborate bet that only made her look like the potential loser when she would end up becoming the lone victor? And then there was Silas, who I admit, had me going back and forth. Sometimes, I wanted to hug the guy; other times, I seriously wanted to smack him. But when all was said and done, he stood by Jane when it counted. But was it all too little too late? Well, I'm not going to be spoiling the story for you. Remember: these books need to be read in order, and since they're all out already, no excuses on not reading them! Five stars for Shameless! ♥
