Review: "Dust to Dust" by Karina Halle
Dust to Dust is the ninth and last installment in the highly popular Experiment in Terror (EIT) series by bestselling author Karina Halle. I hate it when a series I love comes to an end. *sniffle* EIT had me in its supernatural clutches from the first lines of Darkhouse (book one) to the final words in Dust to Dust (book nine). There are thirteen books in all, nine full-length novels and four novellas, and each one brought mystery, suspense, supernatural horror, and romance and had enigmatic lead characters, Declan "Dex" Foray and Perry Palomino.
I've always been a fan of Stephen King's, Anne Rice's, and V.C. Andrews' and I'm always on the lookout for newer authors who can capture my interest in the horror genre. Karina Halle's series did exactly that and more, with stories that could make my heart beat faster from all the inexplicable things happening and a love story that was never rushed and felt perfectly apt amid the unforeseen events surrounding Dex and Perry. I'm proud to say that I'm a member of Team Derry. ♥
This last book finds Dex and Perry facing their most formidable supernatural foe while coming to terms with their respective pasts. If you read Ashes to Ashes, you'll remember that we were left with a cliffhanger that involved Perry being confronted by Dex's estranged brother, Michael. Dust to Dust picks up immediately where the previous book left off, setting both Dex and Perry on the path to confront Michael and the evil force that controls him.
While Dex and Perry have always been the heart of the EIT series, they've also always had a great group of supporting characters that have added to each and every installment. In this final book, Dex and Perry have Ada, Perry's younger sister, and Maximus, the pair's close friend, to aid them in trying to figure out what's really going on and how to put a stop to Michael. Perry and Ada's parents also play larger roles in this installment, especially the girls' mother, who is beginning to realize that she and her daughters (and her late mother) have something more in common.
Dust to Dust brings together all of the elements I love about the EIT books but to a higher level and it punctuated the end of this beloved series just perfectly. I waited months for this book to come out because that cliffhanger in Ashes to Ashes was pure evil (but then aren't all cliffhangers evil), but after finishing it, I kind of wish I could turn back time and not have all things EIT be over and done with. I mean, yeah, Dex and Perry might be glimpsed here and there in Ada's series but Dust to Dust signals the end of this supernaturally wonderful pair. With the way their story concluded here, I'm happy for Team Derry but sad that it's all come to an end. *sniffle*
I'm giving Dust to Dust five stars and if you check out my ratings on Goodreads for all the other books, you'll see that they average out to five stars for the Experiment in Terror series. ^.^ I highly recommend that you read the EIT books if you enjoy supernatural romance thrillers and out-of-the-box characters that are witty and addictive. The first book, Darkhouse, is available for free on Amazon and Smashwords so you have no reason, at the very least, to check it out. ♥
