Review: "Shadows & Dreams" by Alexis Hall

Shadows & Dreams is the second book in the Kate Kane, Paranormal Investigator series by Alexis Hall. After the events of the first book, Iron & Velvet, we find Katherine "Kate" Kane being put on trial by the council of vampires for the murder of one of the vampire princes. Well, technically, she did kill him...but not on purpose, of course, so she'll have to convince majority of the council.

Aside from her life hanging in the balance, Kate finds herself having dreams that are becoming more ominous with each passing night. Then, the dreams begin to become reality: the Morrigan has been awakened from a centuries-long slumber and a vampire army is quickly being assembled. Kate needs to figure out why this is all happening in order to put a stop to it before more lives are lost. 

Add to all that the ex-girlfriend who killed her partner has escaped prison, another ex-girlfriend has gone vigilante, another ex-girlfriend is with her in her dreams, and her current girlfriend isn't really much help with the aforementioned murder trial. Oh and her ex-boyfriend? He seems to think she's the one who's still chasing after him. Can life get any weirder for our dear Kate?

This was a longer read than book one but it was still packed with the same mystery and thrills that have become the trademark of this series. Kate's professional and personal lives are never boring, especially since it seems there's always someone after her, some of whom seem to have been at it since she was a teenager, so there's never a dull moment in the book. I also enjoyed Kate's back and forth with her assistant, Elise, who appears to have captured the eye of Ashriel. ^.^

Shadows & Dreams more than lives up to the expectations set by its predecessor. The mix of snarky humor, paranormal thrills, and intriguing mystery plus a host of characters who are not one-dimensional make this book and the series as a whole one to keep an eye on for the foreseeable future. Author Alexis Hall has hit all the right notes with Kate Kane and her paranormal friends and foes. Four stars for this second installment! ♥

Review: The Room Mate by Kendall Ryan (Roommates #1)

I do believe I've found myself a new book boyfriend to drool, erm, swoon over in Cannon Roth, male main character in bestselling author Kendall Ryan's Roommates series starter, The Room Mate . This had a familiar romance trope--falling-for-your-best-friend's-sibling--and yet I didn't find it boring or tiresome in any way. This has both heart and heat as well as lighthearted humor along with a bit of heart-tugging angst and it's headlined by a couple of main characters that I was totally smitten with from the moment Paige got a pretty good idea of just how much her best friend's younger brother Cannon had grown up from the nerdy boy who followed them around like a puppy when they were kids.
