Review: "Shock & Awe" by Abigail Roux

What?! Has the fangirling ended already?! Hold your horses (though I'm sure Ty wouldn't volunteer to do that...pun intended), fellow bookaholics. My fangirling hasn't ended and probably won't end even after I get done writing all my reviews for all the currently available books in the Cut & Run series. ^.^ While Shock & Awe is not part of the actual series, it IS part of the Cut & Run universe and Ty and Zane do make appearances, so see? The fangirling continues! *evil laugh*

Before we get on to my review, I highly suggest that you read the Cut & Run books before you read Shock & Awe. I know that what I'm suggesting will require you to read seven full-length books (not including the ficlets) but they do provide some necessary background. If you don't want to read all seven, you could probably get away with just reading Touch & Geaux, the seventh book in the series, which lays down the events leading to Shock & Awe, but then you'll wonder about all the history between Ty Grady and Zane Garrett and then just give in to temptation and read all the books. So, win-win! And no, Abigail Roux is not paying me to make you guys read the books. I do it simply to spread the Ty and Zane love. ♥

Shock & Awe is the first book in the Sidewinder series by Abigail Roux and spotlights former Marine Recon Team members and close friends Nicholas O'Flaherty and Kelly Abbott. After the events in Touch & Geaux, Kelly returns home to Colorado with Nick in tow. Nick has been more than supportive, making sure that he's there for Kelly as his friend recuperates from the near-fatal bullet wound he suffered in New Orleans.

Kelly's curiosity gets the best of him when he asks for a kiss from Nick. Thinking that it's nothing more than an itch that needs to be scratched, Nick obliges but you know that all too familiar line, "It started with a kiss"? Well, let's just say that Kelly's curiosity is piqued even further but Nick isn't sure he's willing to risk his friendship with Kelly should anything go wrong with what they're doing. However, Kelly's persistence wins Nick over and they take their first steps into pursuing something more. That is, until Nick's past comes back and is forced to do something he never thought he would have to do again. Then, everything has to be put on hold, with Nick and Kelly's future together hanging in the balance.

There's a bonus story included with Shock & Awe called Bait & Switch. I really liked Shock & Awe but I really, really, REALLY loved Bait & Switch, if only for that Zane moment. ♥ Nick and Kelly are great together but Ty and Zane will always come first in my heart...and if you could see the goofy smile on my face while I typed that one sentence, you'd get how smitten I am with them. Or you'll probably just think I'm a complete nutbar. Hahaha! ^.^

So, while the book mostly focuses on Nick and Kelly, we've also got ourselves the rest of the Sidewinder members AND Ty and Zane. It's a fairly short read, less than a hundred pages, and many have probably said that they wanted it longer but I think that it perfectly whets your appetite for more of Nick and Kelly and Ty and Zane. ^.^ With that in mind, I'm giving Shock & Awe five stars.

Date read: 25 August 2014
