Review: "From the Boots Up" by Andi Marquette

From the Boots Up is an F/F contemporary romance novel by Andi Marquette and is about an incoming veterinary student who's currently helping her father out by working on the ranch their family owns. This summer, a writer for the Los Angeles Times is scheduled to visit the ranch and write a piece on their experience there. It proves to be a summer neither of them will forget.

Meg Tallmadge is 24 and, aside from wanting to become a veterinarian, loves spending her free time at the Diamond Rock, helping her dad out with anything and everything he needs. When her dad informs her that a writer from a major newspaper will be spending a week at the ranch, Meg realizes just how helpful the piece will be in getting new people to come and check them out. She promises to be on her best behavior so that nothing gets in the way of a positive review from the visiting writer.

Meg then comes across a woman trying to change a flat tire and offers to help. There's something about her that grabs Meg's attention and she learns that her name is Gina. Distracted by a phone call, Meg returns to see that Gina has already left, leaving Meg to wonder how she can cross paths with the mystery woman who has captured her imagination.

Gina Morelli finds herself in Wyoming after a fellow writer is unable to make it to an assignment. She meets a young woman while changing a flat tire and is taken by what she sees. She learns her name is Meg but doesn't stay long enough to learn more about her. Once she gets to the Diamond Rock, however, she sees Meg once again.

Meg is attracted to Gina but she's reluctant to do anything about said attraction because of Gina's assignment as the writer sent to cover Diamond Rock. She doesn't want anything clouding Gina's judgment but Gina goes on to interview the staff and guests while taking the time to get to know Meg better. Still, Meg resists taking things further than what appears to be innocent flirting on both their parts. When Gina leaves at the end of the week, Meg wonders if she's lost her one chance to see what being with Gina would truly feel like.

This was a nicely written novella and had a good build-up instead of giving in to the temptation of rushing things, especially since it's not a full-length book. There was a sweetness to it that made it a good read. When I learned where the title came from, I couldn't help but grin. ^.^ Aside from a few editing boo-boos, From the Boots Up kept my attention and interest from start to finish. It gets four stars from me. ♥ The book's sequel, From the Hat Down, will be covered in my next review. ^.^

Date read: 19 September 2014
