Review: Rock Chick Reawakening by Kristen Ashley (Rock Chick #0.5)

Note: This ARC was provided by the publisher via InkSlinger PR in exchange for an honest review.

The trembling was easing, my mind blanking, my eyelids heavy when I head Marcus ask, "In your castle, did you have a prince charming?"
And as I gave up the fight, allowed my eyes to close, I muttered, "There ain't no prince charming for a girl like me."

I am a Rock Chick fangirl. This was the series that introduced me to Kristen Ashley's quirky writing and with it a circle of friends--a family, really--that grew stronger with each new couple that was formed. I read and loved all the original eight novels--Rock Chick, Rock Chick Rescue, Rock Chick Redemption, Rock Chick Renegade, Rock Chick Revenge, Rock Chick Reckoning, Rock Chick Regret, and Rock Chick Revolution--and one short story--Rock Chick Redux--though I confess that I need to write reviews for that and nearly all the books, save for the last one. Bad Jen! I know, I know. But then this gives me an excuse to do a re-read, and this is the kind of series that I think will do well through a second round of reading three years later. But I digress! The reason I'm yapping incessantly all about this all-time favorite series of mine is that Kristen Ashley has finally (FINALLY!) written and released the much awaited story of Daisy and Marcus! If you're a fan of the series, these two, especially Daisy, should be more than familiar. As always, the humor is to be expected, and all the heart-tugging stuff? Yeah, vintage Kristen Ashley.

Daisy was a girl who dreamed, not necessarily of anything big, but of things that were probably normal by most other people. Her father had beaten and abandoned her. Her mother couldn't care less about her. There were only two people who saw her and made her feel as if she mattered...but then they were gone. Leaving behind her mother and their hometown at nineteen was the fresh start Daisy desperately needed. She ended up in Colorado and became a stripper. Not just any stripper but Smithie's headliner. She turned heads, made men--especially certain parts of their anatomy--stand at attention. So, is it any wonder that she gained the attention of Marcus Sloan? But Marcus isn't an ordinary man. He's a man who's earned and demands respect and has made himself wealthy. Once he notices Daisy, his intention is clear: Daisy is his. He bides his time, but then all plans are thrown to the wayside when Daisy is the victim of a terrible and life-altering assault. Can the man who's both a businessman and underground crime boss reawaken the feisty dreamer sleeping within the sassy but damaged Southern belle?

Even with the appearances from the other Rock Chicks and their men, this prequel novella really was all about Daisy and Marcus. Daisy has always been the woman who told it like it was and made sure to let all her Rock Chicks know that she's got their backs. But once you find out her back story, your heart breaks for her because for far too long, she was alone, getting only glimpses of kindness growing up from two people who weren't even part of her family. Her tenacity and courage were inspiring because she did what was necessary to take herself from the situation she was in with her mother and made a life for herself. She was independent and self-sufficient, but she also had the support of her boss. But it was when Marcus entered her life that she realized that she could lean on someone else and that they wouldn't abandon her. Who would have thought that Marcus was this sweet and romantic?! Gah! The man and all his gestures, grand and simple, had me going "Awww!" repeatedly. God bless the man who goes above and beyond for his woman's heart and her coochie. Rock Chick Reawakening five-plus stars. ♥
