Review: Hottest Mess by J. Kenner (S.I.N. #2)

Note: This ARC was provided by Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine in exchange for an honest review.

Hottest Mess is the second novel in the Stark International Novels or S.I.N. series from international bestselling author J. Kenner and picks up soon after the events in the series starter, Dirtiest Secret. I highly recommend that you read the books in the trilogy in order, especially since the first two do end in cliffhangers and there are things that are revealed in the prior book that relate directly to what happens in the new release. If you haven't read the first book and want to avoid any spoilers, I may as well warn you now that I may mention things in this review that could be deemed as spoilers. Feel free to skip to the last paragraph since I usually give an overall synopsis in the second paragraph of my reviews. Now, if you don't mind a spoiler or two or you've already read Dirtiest Secret and know what it's about, continue reading...

Dallas Sykes and Jane West are in love. They've been in love since they were fourteen. There's never been anyone who has ever come close to meaning what these two mean to each other. They've finally decided to be together, but they also know that they can't be open their relationship. After all, in the eyes of the law and the public, they're siblings. They may not share the same blood but for all intents and purposes, they're legally brother and sister and any intimate, romantic, or sexual relationship would wreak havoc. They have secrets they keep from the rest of the world but not one another, vowing to be open and honest. But how can you be with someone but not be able to truly be with them when everyone else is around? If anyone learns the truth about them, it may not only cause problems; it could cost both of them their lives.

I've been itching to read this book from the moment I finished its predecessor. Dallas and Jane's relationship is obviously taboo to a certain degree, but the complexities aren't limited to the familial connection that bonds and binds them. Dallas's reputation is one that he has to maintain, making things even more difficult for him and Jane. There's also his connection to Deliverance, which is one of my favorite things about the series so far. I enjoyed the book, but I must confess that I felt there was just way more sex than was necessary. This is not me being a prude but more of me feeling as if the sex became a filler. I wanted a bit more story--more resolutions and complications (after all, there is a third book). The cliffhanger ending guarantees me anxiously awaiting Sweetest Taboo, with Hottest Mess getting 3.5 stars. ♥
