Review: Holding His Forever by Alexa Riley

Holding His Forever is the latest novella from author Alexa Riley and once again, she’s given readers a story of insta-love with a guaranteed happily-ever-after. Derek Phoenix is a firefighter haunted by the deaths of two men on his team who were also two of his closest friends. He survived an incident when they didn’t and he’s suffering from survivor’s guilt. He isn’t too keen on talking about his feelings or his nightmares with anyone. The darkness that surrounds him has been threatening to swallow him up for far too long and it could very well cost him the job that he loves. Then he and his team race to a burning building and when a door opens to billowing smoke, he finds an angel in a halo of light, an angel who promptly collapses. From that moment on, Derek realizes that he may not be willing to let Fia Clover go.
This story had heart and heat—both the kind you get from the foreplay and the sex and the kind you get from an actual fire that becomes the reason why Derek and Fia meet. And yes, Derek goes by his last name but to Fia, he’s Derek, so I’m going with that. I liked the connection between the two and how they meet makes it easy to understand why the connection is as instantaneous and as strong as it was. I did think, though, that the declarations of love were too sudden, and I’m saying that because their interactions prior to it were limited, not really allowing them to have real conversations. Other than that, I enjoyed the story and genuinely felt that Derek and Fia were perfect for one another. The story had some angst and it worked nicely given what it was about. Holding His Forever gets four out of five stars. ♥
