Review: Helping Hand by Jay Northcote (Housemates #1)

Helping Hand is the first book in the Housemates series from author Jay Northcote and is about university students Jez Fielding and James MacKenzie who share a house with a handful of other students. Jez did a bit too much partying the year before, resulting in his finances taking a hit. Now, he's sworn to focus on his studies and stay in rather than go out. Housemate Mac needs to focus on his studies more, especially since writing essays and papers is part and parcel of almost every subject he takes and writing simply isn't something he feels equipped to doing well. Mac and Jez end up hanging out together inside the house, but when Jez suggests that they watch porn together as a way to pass the time, things get awkward...until they get hot. Soon, they engage in some mutually beneficial and sexually satisfying encounters, but nothing penetrative. Except Jez wants that...but Mac insists he's straight. Jez is already falling for Mac but is there even a shot at something more or will Jez and Mac end up with nothing at all?
I've read a number of stories about housemates or roommates who end up having sex with one another and then later falling for each other and majority has a "gay for you" slant to it. Jez and Mac's story has that air of familiarity and there were certainly no major surprises but I enjoyed it nonetheless. There was no rushing in terms of the developing relationship between the two and the hesitation and doubts made it feel more real. I wouldn't call either young man romantic but I dare say that they have their sweet moments (and let's face it, we all want those sweet moments because those, too, help give it some semblance of authenticity). Between the two, Jez has a clearer idea of what he wants, but even that gives him pause and it's always that risk of whether to cross the line between friendship and more that makes books like this one a thrill to read. The fact that it's written as well as it is makes it even more worthwhile. If you love GFY romances, I'm highly recommending you check out Helping Hand. I'm giving it 4.5 stars. ♥
