Review: Delta: Retribution by Cristin Harber (Delta #1)

Delta: Retribution is the series starter from bestselling author Cristin Harber with Delta serving as the spin-off series from Titan, which happens to be one of my favorite military romance series. We're introduced to the members of Delta, a ghost team of operatives under the Titan Group and led by Brock Gamble, whose own story was told in Gambled, but the love story was all about Trace Reeves, a Navy SEAL in his twenties, and Marlena McCloud, a twenty-one-year-old biological engineering student. Trace meets a young woman named Mallory while in Germany and they share one unforgettable night together before she disappears on him. Soon after, Trace receives an offer he can't refuse and it's from none other than Jared Westin of the Titan Group. His Navy SEAL career ends on a less than impressive note, but being part of Delta gives Trace the opportunity to stay busy and get the adrenaline rush he needs while spending his free time chasing down leads for one important project. Then Delta's latest mission turns up a surprise: their high value target is Marlena, only Trace remembers her as Mallory, the woman he hasn't been able to forget. After he rescues her, Trace soon realizes that Marlena could end up rescuing him too.

Titan has the kind of reputation that's difficult to live up to, but it appears that Delta has hit the ground running with this first book and intends to carve out a reputation of its own. I really enjoyed Trace and Marlena's story as well as meeting the Delta members for the first time while having the familiarity that Jared and Brock bring with them. Both Trace and Mar carry with them issues brought about by a member of their respective families. Trace is dealing with a lot of guilt due to his twin brother being killed in action and his obsessive need to get his hands on the one item attached to Michael till his death: his dog tags. Then there's Marlena who has a sperm donor, aka her poor excuse for a father, who has made her doubt her own worth, insisting that her intelligence will bring her nothing but trouble and that no man would ever be interested in her. Together, though, Trace and Mar give each other something no one else has: peace for Trace and desirability for Mar. With Cristin Harber's patented brand of romance and action, Delta: Retribution did not fail in its mission to give readers an enjoyable first book in what is shaping up to be a really good series, and a cast of alpha male Delta members I'm ready to be invested in. Four stars. ♥
